Does it do it every time? Say from stop light to stop light?

Howdy Grant, it is an automatic and seems to do it every time whether hot or cold. Shifts pretty darn hard. No mods that I am aware of.

Also previous owner indicated that it has been doing this for a long time. I just got it this weekend and knew this was something I would need to deal with but not sure where to start. I've had vettes before and they did not shift hard like this. My first thought was could this be a "shift kit" per se but there have been no mods and is a bone stock car.

A shift kit would be hitting all gears not just one.

The guy that sold it just sidestepped the transmission rebuild that’s needed. He knew what he was doing.

How long is "a long time"? I'm guessing just long enough to know an expensive rebuild is looming.

Not sure how long. I will ask. Is there any chance that a reflash of the computer could help?

Can't see how, unless someone previously had it tuned to have a hard 1-2 shift only.
Any Corvette or other decent car shop near you? I'd bring it in to a good shop for testing.

Thats what I was thinking, maybe someone screwed with the shift points with a Diablo or other tuner. If you think this car is stock and yet the coolant temp is 190, you might have a hint it was tuned.

Im in a small town so no shops here but I am about an hour from Houston. Any thoughts on shops in the Houston area?

Coolant temp is good at about 190. Im wondering if a reflash would be a good first move?

I would ask the previous owner if possible, some people get carried away with the shift points where its banging into gear. (you need to do more investigating).

TCC valve? Although they are usually intermittent. A shift kit would replace the valve and eliminate that problem. Maybe worth a shot before pulling the trans.

I also just got a 2002 also, and noticed the same thing immediately, and did some research. In the owner manual there is a section called One to Four Shift light, only in the Manual Transmission. "One to Four Shift Light (Manual Transmission) When this light comes on, you can only shift from FIRST (1) to FOURTH (4) instead of FIRST (1) to SECOND (2). You must complete the shift into FOURTH (4) to turn off this feature. This helps you get the best possible fuel economy. After shifting to FOURTH (4), you may downshift to a lower gear if you prefer. NOTICE: Do not try to force the shift lever into SECOND (2) or THIRD (3) when the 1 TO 4 SHIFT light comes on. Do not try to re-engage FIRST (1) after starting to shift into FOURTH (4). You will damage your transmission. Shift only from FIRST (1) to FOURTH (4) when the light comes on. This light will come on when: The engine coolant temperature is higher than 169F (76C), you are going 15 to 19 mph (24 to 31 km/h) and you are at 21 percent throttle or less. "

This is from the Owner manual. I was wondering why it was saying 1 to 4 shift on the panel. I did it today driving around and it worked just fine. Hopefully this is what is going on with your Vette? And if I am wrong--let me know.

sunbirdbaby... he has an auto. And you need either a $20 skip shift eliminator, or a tune to get rid of that.

The absolute first thing I did to my car. Eventually had it tuned out including the dash light.
If you plan no other mods, do this.
Do your research, get one that turns out the dash light.
