I have a friend with 2001 Coupe. Occasionally his A/C quits. It blows but compressor does not engage. We have discovered disconnecting/reconnecting the battery resolves the issue for awhile. Do any of you have an idea of what might be wrong? No HVAC codes.

Check you freon levels. A disconnect as a temprary fix is a tell tale for low freon. The low pressure switch senses the low freon and cut off the compressor.
Ok we put gauges on. We are in Mobile AL. outside temperature is 95 humidity is about 85%.
AC is cooling good.
At idle low side is 52 psi high side is 275
At 2000 rpm low side is 40 high side is 325.
He bought the car about 2 years ago so we don't know history of AC repairs.
Those readings sound high to me. My rule of thumb is about 30 on low side and 230 on high.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Those readings seem correct for the given conditions. According to the attached chart your target values should be:
Low Side: 39-42
High Side: 310-330
Center Vent Temp: 67°F-71°F
Check your pressures against the chart below. Make sure you take your readings with:
Engine @ 2000 rpm
A/C in coldest setting
Fan at maximum speed
Both windows down
Thermometer in center air vent
When adding refrigerant, pay attention to both pressures, otherwise you might end up with the high side sky-high trying to get the low side to the chart's value.
Checking against that chart. Our readings look about right.
Temp at vent ranges between 41 driving - 50 at idle..
So the mystery continues. Why does it quit cooling sometimes
and disconnecting battery fixes for a time. ?????
