Default Best streetable cam for 2000 C-5 M6? Yes, I want Max power.

What's the best streetable cam to make the most power with a 2000 C-5 M6 with longtube headers, C6 intake, and cold air system? My heads are stock. I will get a tune.

Thanks,

Mark

"Streetable" is different for every person. What's your budget and how much power you want?

Totally subjective to your own interpretation. A simple 228 cam may be unstreetable for some, but barely scratches the surface for others.

When you say streetable, I interpret that as you don't want to lose much if any low end torque. If that is the case, max I would go with is a Cam Motion LS1 Stage 3 cam (normal or high lift): http://www.cammotion.com/camshafts/l...-218-224-16-3/

Lingenfelter GT2-3 with Comp 26918 springs. Not too much duration, fast ramps, high lift, wide separation.

Mr Ed Curtis streetsweeper ht.

Martin Smallwoods Tick Sns torquemax #2

for a daily style street car.
Many with the 224r 228r style cams wish they went bigger.
try to find a owner of the 2 cams I just suggested and I bet they will tell you how much the like them.
if you have 3-400$ bolt on some used 243/799 heads milled .020 and you will grin from ear to ear with the extra 25hp just from the milled/more flow heads.

You mentioned long tube headers - I would then have to presume that you also have done or are considering bolt-on upgrades such as duplicating the LS6 engine top engine parts, such as 243/799 heads with the LS6 intake, throttle body and MAF, correct? Keep in mind that less duration, more lift and wider lobe separation makes a camshaft that is less peaky with a wilder power band (more torque under the curve) and less chance of surging in traffic - like the Lingenfelter GT2-3 that I mentioned above. Or you can just go crazy and put a big camshaft in there. Personally my 6 year old Comp grind (226/230 0.598"/0.608" with 113+2 LSA) is at the limit of normal tolerance for street use (think about being stuck in bumper to bumper traffic) in a warmed over 5.7L LS6 with long tube headers. It has a nice idle - not silky smooth, but not too lopey and not much surging below 2000 RPM or with the a/c running. They may now offer newer higher tech lobe ramps that would make this a bit more street friendly. Keep in mind that everyone has their own opinion on camshafts - ask 100 people and your will get at least 103 different answers. Watch the max lift on the camshaft too. My forged pistons have -2cc valve reliefs to work with the high lift camshaft. Your best bet maybe to call Comp Cams and talk with them about their recommendations for your combination and needs - whatever you do, don't let your ego get carried away with the peak dyno sheet numbers.

Also keep in mind that the stock factory head gaskets had a 0.052" or 0.053" compressed thickness. Cometic offers a 0.040" MSL head gasket that can boost the static compression ratio by 0.4 points. The stock LS1 with 853/241 heads with 66.67cc chambers had a 10.1:1 or 10.2:1 ratio depending on where you read the data. Now switching to either of the stock 243/799 heads with the 64.45cc chambers and the 0.040" head gaskets, bumps that up to about 10.9:1 to 11.0:1. if the heads do not need to be milled to get them cleaned up, then the thinner head gaskets are ideal (inexpensive and easy) way to boost the comp ratio. Also if the heads need milled, keep in mind the general rule of thumb that for every 0.007" machined off, removes about 1cc from the chamber.

I have a 2000 M6 with the LS6 intake, long tube headers, Z06 243 heads milled 0.003" (to straighten), cometic 0.040" head gaskets, Vmax CNC ported throttle body, Vararam CAI and a Cam Motion custom grind that replicates the Ed Curtis Streetsweeper HT for lift and duration but uses the Cam Motion lobes and core (rather than Comp Cam that Ed has grind his cams) . Replaced the injectors with Ford/Boisch Red Top 36 lb and they are right at 80%. Also installed the Katech C5R timing chain and an after market chain guide. API bolts. Manton 11/32" push rods, BTR platinum dual springs, titanium retainers.

Overall I am happy with this set up. There remain some small(ish) tuning issues to further reduce surging and improve initial idle stability on hot start. Being a M6 it would be a pain if stuck in stop and go traffic for a long time - even without mods. As it is driveability is somewhat compromised vs. stock, but on the throttle performance is outstanding.

I have not had it on a dyno but in 3rd gear pulls vs a base C7 (i.e. 460hp at crank) the car creates a bus length gap on the C7.

call or go to Cam Motions website and either talk to someone or fill out their questionnaire on line. "biggest streetable cam" is just too ambiguous to answer. good luck with what ever you choose and share your results.
