Was just doing some maintenance stuff on my 2000 C5 with 31,000. miles on it. Was going to replace as much clutch fluid as possible using the 'Ranger method" as it is probably the original 18 year old fluid. My understanding is to suck out fluid from master but not all the way to bone dry (to prevent air from getting into system) refill, pump clutch peddle 30 times or so and repeat till fluid is clear.
Question is what fluid to use? Manual says use "Hydraulic Clutch fluid (GM Part No. 12345347 OR equivalent DOT-3 Brake fluid) Looked on net with GM part number and kept came coming up with "discontinued"
Another member said that there is an additive in the GM fluid and that you should'nt use DOT-3. May not have choice though?
Also read somewhere that GM now recommends DOT-4 (maybe synthetic?) for all corvette clutch fluid.
I use dot 4 with no issues, the ranger method works for the power steering as well, mine was black and after doing the ranger method the steering is much better !!!!

Thanks for sharing your experience with it. Thinking stop over thinking it and just use DOT-4. Especially since it appears that the GM recommended clutch fluid may have been discontinued.
Thanks.
brake fluid works fine, personally I'm not a fan of the so called "ranger" method... I guess it's better than absolutely nothing at all but I still think it's a waste of time and money since you will be going through bottles of fluid trying to make it stay clean and it never will unless you get the crud out of the master and slave... I'd rather get it fully flushed once the right way and be done with it
I hear ya. better to do it the right way. Just hoping with only 31K miles if I stay on it might get by with the lazy way.
Thanks!
to be fair it is a pita to bleed it from the slave so I understand why people try it... if you ever install a clutch you absolutely need to get a remote bleeder and once that's installed flushing the clutch fluid out is a breeze and super easy to maintain
Absolutely. If clutch time = remote bleeder time. I'm in good shape at the moment and just hoping to put that off till necessary.
Thanks.

after 4 or 5 flushes with the Ranger method mines stays clean a along time, now do it at every oil change !!!!!
