Default C5 z06 cam and heads question

Hello. I have done a lot of searching but have not come to any solid conclusions. I currently have a 2003 z06 with 1 7/8 headers, catted xpipe, bb bullets and a halltech intake with a tune. I am looking at getting a cam for sure and am wondering if it is worth it to have the heads sent out at the same time to be ported and valves done by Texas speed. I mostly drive the car for fun around town, but want to get as much out of it as possible without getting too far away from stock like drive ability. I would like to get the best bang for the buck at this time while it’s all taken apart and do not want to keep paying for retunes. This will most likely be the end of the engine modification road for me after this step. After market heads are too expensive and f/i is not a option I want to pursue. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I've been through the whole evolution of modding since buying my Z in '03. When the more power bug hit, I went with what I thought was the best at the time; TF215s, and they are the ****. The cam was a Crane 228-232/112+5 and .600/,600. After adding a home ported FAST90 combo, and Meziere EWP, the tuned result (Mustang dyno) was 483/432 RW. I wish I had left well enough alone, because I added an A&A SC kit later which made the car less fun for my driving style. (old guy)

So did you regret putting on the s/c only or regret the entire modding process? I’m just trying to figure out if having the heads ported/milled etc is worth it. For the extra 900-1000 dollars.I have no other intentions of modding further like a fast comb etc. unless there are other mods I can do at this point of doing the cam that are reasonable in price and worth it power wise.

If I were you I would port the heads and run a smallish cam in the 224-228 range. Then you’ll have solid power with good drive ability.

I liked the modding process, as it allowed me to make a car into something I couldn't afford when I was younger. I only regret the addition of a supercharger because the car was really fun and fast NA, with a completely streetable cam, but now is so squirrelly in the first two and a half gears. I will probably have to get drag radials to just be able to drive normally at slow speeds. My tuner sure nailed throttle response.

If you can find a used FAST 90 or 92 intake + LS2 TB, it will give you around 15 rwhp for a reasonable price on top of your wish list.
WIth your current mods + ported/CNCed heads, BTR stage2/3 cam and FAST setup you might be looking around 460-470 rwhp and 410-420 rwtq depending on dyno. Great street manners and would run like an ape to 7k rpm. You didn't mention what clutch setup you have. If it's stock that wont last long. I ended up with Monster LT1-S twin disk and steel FW. Good luck

Why no FI? The LS6 cam is a small blower cam and you already have the bigger headers. By the time you buy a cam and springs, and have the heads done (and all the other stuff "while you're in there") you're getting close to blower money. Install labor would be about the same.

Guess what I'm thinking about over the winter....

Good luck!

The exhaust valve stems are caked with rock hard carbon stacked up. Definitely have the heads cleaned up even if you did nothing else to them.

I have Heads, Headers, Fast 92 and I put in a Cam motion Titan 3. I Love it, very drivable and still has a nice rumble and shake.
I'd definitely port !

are your heads stock ported or aftermarket heads? Cam motion was suggested to me and I may be lookin at a custom grind from them. I’ll look into the titan 3. Thanks

also, clutch will probably be in store in the future from what I’ve read. I’m still on stock clutch. Car has 23k miles.

Hi zeevette, Im in the same dilema, just not sure if I want the Supercharger. I live in the mountains with lots of great curvy roads. I put in a 3:42 Z06 rear end in my C5 auto, not a z06, and its woke it up Im thinking about a cam now Just dont know how squirly a SC will be on my roads, maybe not safe? not too many places here to get on it before hitting turns...

This depends on your power goals. We can see 435-440rwhp with just our cam package, headers, and cai. Here is our cam package at $1950.
https://horsepower-addicts.com/colle...te-cam-package

To do the heads, intake manifold, throttle body, and injectors you are looking at another $3k plus on top for 40-50 more hp.

All depends on where you draw the line with a budget.
