Mobil 1 0w-40 ESP Formula
Time to change oil in my 2001 LS1 Coupe, have always used Mobil 1, the car has 102,000 miles, so this change I thought I would try the 0w40 ESP Formula, anyone tried this new oil in a C5? Also ExxonMobil has a good rebate program, if you buy 5qts.or more and a Mobil 1 oil filter you can get a $17.00 check back.
Thanks,

Being an o1 motor at 102K miles.....I dont know. A lot of those motors had piston slap even when new. When your motor is cold, do you have piston slap?? Its a knocking noise until the motor warms up some. If you do, I would not use a 0 weight oil. I would instead use a 10W-30 or even a 10W-40 weight oil. If you have no slap, I would just stick with the Factory Recommended 5W-30 oil. Thats really what the motor bearing clearances were built for some 22 years ago for the LS1. Just my opinion.....with a lot of years of experience. I like Valvoline or Mobil 1 Full Synthetic and have used Penzoil also.

I have been running Mobil 1, 0W-40 European Car Formula for a couple of years now. Before that switch I ran Red Line 10W- 40.
It appears that ESP is for vehicles with diesel particulate filters and the European Car Formula for those that do not.

Today, Mobil 1 ESP Formula 0W-40 synthetic motor oil is the factory fill for all C7 Corvette models and can be used by most C7 Corvette owners on both the street and the track (2019 ZR1 owners are asked to use Mobil 1 15W-50 for track days).Reference: mobiloil.com/en/article/why-the-mobil-advantage/automakers-trust-mobil-1/corvette-recommended-oilAlso:Mobil 1™ ESP Formula 0W-40

Yeah, I had to use the ESP in my Mercedes Bluetec diesel car. It was very expensive. I think it would be overkill in a C5.
Do what you want, I always do!
Good luck!

Bought some 0-40 FS formula when it was on sale at costco a month or two ago. It has more phosphorus and zinc than regular M1 by 200 PPM. I'm going to use it for the next oil change or two.

The Zinc will probably help with ring and cylinder wall wear. Thats a good thing. I dont know if the oil companys quit putting Zinc in these oils because of the government emissions requirements,,, or because we no longer have flat tappet cam shafts. At any rate, maybe an Oil Guru can chime in on this.

I went with the 0-40 in my supercharged 2002 Z-06 after extensive research and comparison over at Bob the oil guy website and haven't had any issues. I even went with it over the 5-30 in my Buick Verano with the 2.0 liter turbo and it likes it too. Getting ready to change the oil in the Buick again as it's my daily and I need to run the Wally World for another jug as this tiny liter 2 liter engine takes 6 quarts. 6 quarts! My 2005 GTO with the 6.0 liter LS2 takes 6 quarts. Weird.

Yes, the 0w40 is a superior oil to the outdated 5w30. See my post here with more detail:

Also, straight from the Mobil site:
https://mobiloil.com/en/motor-oils/mobil-1/mobil-1-esp
Of the product lineup, Mobil 1™ ESP Formula 0W-40 is the first and only dexos2™-approved motor oil developed specifically for Chevrolet Corvettes. Although Mobil 1™ 5W-30 motor oil is still recommended for many generations of Corvette, ExxonMobil recommends upgrading to Mobil 1 ESP Formula 0W-40 to help reduce oil consumption and provide maximum performance. The majority of GM/Opel/Vauxhall/Chevrolet Diesel and Gasoline vehicles can use dexos2™ lubricants as GM/Opel has advised that the dexos2™ specification is backward compatible to older GM/Opel specifications (GM-LL-A-025 and GM-LL-B-025).

Google query: "RichieRichZ06" 0w-40 ESP
Short version, I would hesitate to recommend switching.

OP: you have over 100k on that engine. Going to a 0-anything oil is probably a step in the wrong direction, except as a winter lube in the frozen north, as by definition all the clearances will be more than when new - when 5-30 was recommended.
