Default Blocks & Where to find one - LS6 / LS2 / LS3

I just got the pan out of the car to get the last of the needles from my dead $13 GM lifter and I took the knockout blow instead.

I found half the roller, the entire pin in the middle, no more needles.... but over to one side was a chunk of block clearly from the wall around the lifter that let go.

I am now in search of a late LS1 or LS6 block. However, what else would work with my parts? I'm not averse to a conversion if it doesn't break the bank. I am mostly trying to keep my costs contained as I am already past my plan for the summer with this car. Open to options.

--> Where can I find a bare block for sale? I am seeing LS2s on various vendor sites for around $1,400 new/bare.

Parts I've got ready to go:
PRC 225 62cc heads
Fast92
AA V3Ti kit
Jam Cam
RKT timing chain set
Edelbrock LS1 2-piece timing cover
LS2 lifter trays
Johnson lifters

I think new LS1 builds are being done with 5.3L blocks bored out. Check out texas-speed.com. S-D is a good source too.

but a few forced induction friends say the cylinder walls get rather thin for a forced induction build when going to a LS1 bore. I would use one for an HPDE oriented 5.7 build if I were the OP building a forged motor for a supercharger, I'd go another route.

Good reference!

For the money, the better combo I am finding currently is through Tick where they have a 402 K1 rotating assembly for about 2400 optioned out. Base price 2060. CNC has a ton of options also. Still trying to find more vendors.

If you are willing to take the weight, a Gen 3 6.0 Iron Block is a nice option holds the power and minimal complications swapping.

I did consider it. Even those are hard to find "right this moment" near me. Plenty of 5.3s though. My thought is that an extra 100 from the block, along with perhaps 50+ for the blower and dedicated drive, and then the (presumably?) heavier forged internals.... as well as the fact that a fresh iron block still costs more than a fresh LS2 aluminum block... I am leaning towards the LS2.

I think you are about spot on, and rotating assembly weight differences would be negligible.

I have a good ls6 short block available, came out of my 02Z with 60k miles. Was going to change out the rods and pistons for some forged ones for another project but decided to go with a junkyard 5.3L. It had zero problems when it was pulled out of my Z for a stroked LS3. It was taken down to the bare block. I was planning to have arp main studs installed and lightly hone the bores again so thats the only reason it was taken apart. It could be loose assembled and shipped if you are interested. PM me.....Id let it go for $800 plus whatever shipping would be.

That's a good score. I would have jumped on that, but have ordered a fresh LS2 block which is halfway to me now.
