Repair & Service Manuals
I have read on the forum that you should have a good repair/service manual. My question is what does every one consider a good one. I have found on Amazon and E-BAY a set of 3 repair manuals from GM for 1997 Corvette's. One set is labeled Chevy shop manual and the other is labeled Corvette Preliminary shop manuals. Both places say they were written by GM. I want to get something but am confused with what.

It's a fair bet by your screen name that you're looking for the 97 manuals, but just for others who might read this thread, I have a set of 98 manuals and that set didn't come with a supplement, or if it did I never got it. Someone else here might confirm or rebut that, but I don't think any of the later years had 4 volumes, only 3.

I TOO, have a GM Factory 98 service manual set and YES, they only came with THREE volumes. One of those volumes is thicker and contains the other volume for that year. The 97, 98 & 99 are VERY similar and I use my 98 set to service all three years.
NOTE, Your 97 has a REAR MOUNTED Electronic Brake Traction Control Unit (EBTCM)
So did the 98 up until mid model year and then it was changed to the FRONT location.
A 98 service manual shows schematics and service for BOTH designs. The 99 only has info for the fronted mounted EBTCM design.
If you can find a good 98 set, I WOULD NOT pass it up!

The 98 manual I have was not without errors. When I did my transmission swap from auto to manual, I had a hell of a time with the wiring on that because the manual had incorrect colors on a couple wires. I pulled my hair out for a few weeks till another forum member sent me pages from their manual that showed the correct schematics. By that time, my brain was fried trying to figure out what was going on, so that turned into a much bigger project than it had to be.
