Default Possible tranny issue

02 z06. The tranny was rebuilt by rkt maybe a year and a half ago. I was driving the other day and shifted gears and it ground into the gear. I didn’t think anything of it other than I must have just screwed something up, never happened before that. Now it’s grinding into a few different gears.

So I parked in and drained the fluid and there’s not any metal in there at all. So now I’m at a loss and going to start trouble shooting things. Could it be my shifter has gone out of alignment all the sudden and it’s not putting the gears in cleanly? That’s my next step is to realign the shifter.

Anything else I should get into?

If it physically has changed location, I would verify that something isn't out of whack. Also, make sure it doesn't need to be bled and isn't completely disengaging.

It seems to. When driving it before i shut it all
down there is a high pitch noise and vibration on the shifter while moving. Tranny has no fluid. But with the engine off I can carefully change gears and it feels pretty normal.

You can't tell with it off because the input shaft isn't spinning. If it's not disengaging properly due to a clutch or fluid issue, it will show up running.

How would I make sure the clutch is disengaging? The fluid has about 10k miles on it. The tranny rebuild, clutch and slave cylinder were all changed at the same time.

I am sure others will chime in. One way by feel would be to see what kind of release you have before it starts to engage. You could also raise the rear wheels and see what they do with it gear and the clutch pushed. You are making a determination if the clutch is turning the input shaft with enough grip to mess up the shifting process.

But you need to determine if your shifter concern is a concern.

Opened up the shifter. And it was off by a hair, so I readjusted. Doubt that was the issue though based on how little it was off.

Put it back together. The clutch is acting normal.

I drove it around the block with the console off and open to the shifter. It sounds like it’s something that is rotating right there that is rubbing on something. Bearings bad around there? Hopefully one of you guys has an idea to help me where to go from here.

Your shifter assembly is attached to the torque tube, there’s bearings and couplers inside that. Hopefully that’s not what your hearing.
