I realize that there have been a number of solutions over the years for column lock bypass methods, and a number of aftermarket kits supplied as well.
I am uncertain if my 03 Z has a lot or has had work done to alleviate the problem.
What should I look for to verify if I have a solution in place already or not?
As one who was affected by the failure occurring on my first C5, a then new 2000 coupe, while in motion - a thing GM expressly claimed could not happen but did - this is a key feature to determine.
I can't speak for many of the bypass options, but if the LMC5 bypass was installed, you can open the passenger foot well panel and see it wired in, even if it's tucked in pretty well, with a small cylinder housing the electronics. There's also a missing relay from the top end of the recess, but that's a bit harder to see.
First thing, does your steering wheel lock when the key is removed?
If it does not lock then you have one of the 2 styles of bypass. I would check the passenger foot well for the LMC5 module as described by redzg.
If it does lock, then install a LMC5. I have put in at least 3 of these and redid a 4th for friends. Since you have an 03 do the brown wire mod that is listed as optional in the instructions.
I have a '98 that has not had the GM recall nor - to my knowledge - any issues with inadvertently locking. The other day as I was exiting the car I turned the steering wheel a little and it locked. I then inserted the ignition key and it unlocked per normal. After 22 years should I install the LMC5 or just forget about it at this point.
