[Review] Kumho Ecsta MX tires in C5 sizes, $600 a set
I know a lot of people have been looking at these. I had a set installed last week and wanted to get some seat time before I posted much about them. I had the usuall concerns b/c in the past I percieved kumhos as a cheap/economy brand and I'm quite picky when it comes to my C5. I had read plenty of reviews on them, mainly from those autocrossing with them. The word out there was there only rival was the BFG KDs G-force.
They were $600 a set from tirerack and 2nd day FedEx was $37 on the order. Some of my concerns about quality were put to rest quickly... 2 of the 4 tires balanced without wheel weights, actually the first time I've had any tires balance without weights, other 2 only required small weights. The tires look good and much less road noise than the stock GY Runflats. Grip, by SOTP, feels much better, I have no doubt that they are as sticky or sticker than most premium brands, as others had told me. My C5 is not a daily driver and I haven't been in rain yet (I rarely drive the C5 in the rain), but one one assume that they would not be as good in the wet as some other tires, they are a "max performance" tire mainly designed for dry weather. I'm get the car aligned to custom specs next week, similar to Z06 settings but with some minor changes (provided by c4c5tech).
Benelliwang's review may be of some interest to anyone considering these also: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=435164

I put a set on my Z-28, (17" wheels and tires from The Tire Rack), and at first did'nt like them. They seemed to get a lot better after 500 are so miles. I have about 6,000 miles on them now and have had no problems at all. :smash:

Good to hear, I just picked some up and so far it has been spin city. I hope they get a little better with some miles on them.

You get nothing but spins??? Could this mean there are big variations in quality??? Can someone else post your results?

HEY!!
Just had a set delivered and mounted and WHAT A DIFFERENCE!! Ride is quiet and smooth :yesnod: :yesnod: Also before I got the new tires, when I hit the gas and released the clutch quickly the GY RF's would just spin. Now with the new Kuhmo's the rear end hunkers down and goes forward.
It feels really
Just my humble opinion.
Merry Christmas

I just put a full set on last week. I absolutely love them. It has been rainy here in South Florida for the past few days and they seem to work quite well in the wet.

Re: [Review] Kumho Ecsta MX tires in C5 sizes, $600 a set (ncvetteman)
i wanted to add my review
i had the MX's installed 2 weeks ago, and have been enjoying them every since. I went from the KDW's to the MX because of the price. Tires seem to only last me about 8 months before its time to replace them, my logic was why spend to much when your going to be back at discount tire in 8 months.
So far the MX's have been great, I notice them more than when I put on the kdw's. Last few days I have been driving in the rain, and they have help well, the only time they have slipped at all, was when i was showing off. As long as they continue to behave and feel the way they do now, i will be ordering another set in 8-10 months :)

I had a set of Kumho Ecsta 16"s on the 88, then 17"s on the 88 and loved them. They were a geat street tire wet/dry and were awesome on the autocross. I just got the MX's for the C5 and hope to have them on this weekend. Don't let the low price fool you into thinking low quality.

12.628@112.97mph with 1.932 60', tire pressure at 27 psi cold. Launched at 3500rpm with no wheel spin that I can hear and granny shifted all the way to save my stock clutch. That was early November when the weather was still worm. I am going back to track on Jan. 25 and hoping for better time. I am gonna try 20psi and launch at 4000 rpm, which me luck

FYI...I emailed Kumho to check on the 295/35/18 size. The reply stated that it would be the middle to end of next year :cry
I guess I'll be purchasing more Toyo's.

Whats the BIGGEST set of tires they are producing?
I need something for ZO6 rims. Is there anywhing good available. I don't mind going wider than stock.
