Harmonic Balancer Install Question

Two questions here:

1-What do I use to measure the depth of the nose of the crankshaft in the bore of the harmonic balancer? The digital micrometer I have doesn’t really work for measuring depth.

2- When I removed my stock HB bolt, there was an oily substance behind the bolt in the crank. It seemed lightweight to be engine oil, but it was dark. I am pretty certain this was the first time the HB bolt had been removed as there was a ton of orange-looking thread lock all over the threads and head of the bolt. Thoughts?

That's how I did it..........Oh, and use an ARP bolt, too.
