Picked up a C5 a couple weeks ago and seem to be having fuel pressure issues. Initial issues were periodic long crank starts. Seems that a couple key cycles to prime the system does the job but would rather not have to do this long term. I loaned a fuel pressure gauge and it seems when key on/engine off the pressure spikes to 58 psi where it needs to be and then drops to 0 after seconds. I ended up replacing fuel pressure regulator due to ease of access and preventative maintenance which seemed to help the leak but not much. I ended plugging off the return hose and have the same issue so I can tell it is coming from the feed side. I am leaning toward the check valve line but wanted opinions of the group? I crawled underneath to see where the check valve line was but as everyone knows it is hard to crawl around with just jack stands. For clarification on my end, is the check valve line the one between the fuel filter and the pump on the drivers side? I have ordered a new check valve but was curious if there was anything else I can diagnose while the part is in the mail?
Doug, as we discussed this is what you'll need if you don't want to "guess" where your fuel pressure is going…you can check injectors and check valve…basically the Mityvac and the fuel line set !!…and it’s good to have the 3/8 and 5/16 set !!
Appreciate the response. Have the check valve in the mail and was planning to do the filter as well being I will be touching it during this install. I have heard of the techtron for the fuel in some of the other posts on here, may have to try it out. Thanks for the recommendations!
Excellent! I’d do the fuel filter first and do maybe 2-3 Techron additives for each 2-3 fuel ups. I know this has fixed the problem for some. But my money is on the fuel line. I helped a friend replace the line who had the exact same issues as you. Fixed the problem immediately. Leaking injectors are just so rare with these cars it can easily be eliminated. There was one member who had a great write up on how to replace the fuel line. I’ll try to find it for you.
Doesn’t the 97 and 98’s have a fuel pressure regulator that may cause a bleed down vs. the post 98’s which have the pressure regulator built into the filter ??…don’t see how a fuel filter can cause a bleed down…just asking ???
Where did you get the check valve and could you take a picture of it in the car when you change it for reference?
Purchased a used one on eBay part number- 10404820 (97/98 Check valve).
I am trying to naturally drain the fuel out of the Vette before starting the swap. Most recommend dropping the drivers side tank before the install to avoid damaging the new check valve line. Once I dig into it later this week I will send a picture of the underside setup. From what I can see under the vehicle, the check valve line connects to the drivers side fuel pump on one end and when it splits to a Y, one side connects to the back of the fuel filter and the other side connects to lines that go to passenger tank (others correct me if I am wrong?)
Below is a pic of the check line valve line that was ordered online.
