Re: Has anyone cleaned their MAF sensor??? (edmaverik)
Man, I have never cleaned one but I have a company van, 2000 chevy, that ran like hell until our mechanic pulled it out and cleaned it. He used window cleaner! Runs good now.
Re: Has anyone cleaned their MAF sensor??? (edmaverik)
Yes, you can clean them. Just about any carborator spray cleaner will work. I have personally used computer spray cleaner. You just spray it on and then air blow it dry - with a can of compressed air (PC users do this) or an air compressor. I would not recommend trying to hand wipe as you can damage the filament wires and ruin the MAF.
Re: Has anyone cleaned their MAF sensor??? (edmaverik)
Use contact cleaner which can be obtained from Radio Shack. Just another reason why I DO NOT use a K+N. Heard about this too many times and do nt believe that they are any better than a AC filter.

I also use contact cleaner. Especially after re-oiling a air filter. ;)
Re: Has anyone cleaned their MAF sensor??? (bparker)
Thanks everybody for the input! I cleaned my MAF last nite with a pump sprayer filled w/ 91% isopropyl alcohol and 30 q-tips. There was definitely some sort of gunk! All the q-tips turned black!!!
Last but not least!!! This might sound crazy, but I polished my MAF with my dremel and polishing wheel w/ a slight amount of metal polish! Reason why? The MAF is now screenless and I noticed that there was some burrs when they pulled the MAF out of the casting mold....NOW ITS SLIPPERY SMOOOTH.
Took my vette out on the interstate after a 10 mile warm up and wooohoooo... no more bogging and completely smooth acceleration now!
Re: Has anyone cleaned their MAF sensor??? (edmaverik)
Just exactly what is it that you fellows are cleaning? I know the MAF is what is attached to the tunnel but what is inside that needs to be cleaned? I think there is a screen and of course an open area. Are there also some wires that need cleaning? Do you clean the MAF from either end?

Can you give a little more info on where to get this cleaner, what the name of it is, and how much. I am going to do this to my car soon as it gets out of the shop. I have 115k miles on my larger MAF.
Thanks,
Jon
Re: Has anyone cleaned their MAF sensor??? (XCELER8)
Went to the dyno and one guy asked me if i had cleaned mine since I put in the K&N, I said no, so we cleaned w/ some carb cleaner quick. Gave me 5 hp proven on the dyno!!!
Re: Has anyone cleaned their MAF sensor??? (XCELER8)
I have no MAF screen, I removed the screen on m MAF because it was very restrictive.
I used 91% isopropyl rubbing alcohol that I had in the medicine cabinet. The pump spray I had is just a plain ol' sprayer that I use with water to spray the plants around the house. I turned thes sprayer to a broad stream setting and sprayed away and let the alocohol do evaporate on the MAF sensor wires!

You clean the sensor wires that are inside the MAF Sensor. Just be careful and use common sense when cleaning them (don't use 120psi compressed air to blow them off or you cold distort or break them). Just be careful and use rubbing alcohol or carb cleaner and some Q-tips.
Check the pic below to see the wires in question:
Re: Has anyone cleaned their MAF sensor??? (MTWallet)
Are we cleaning ONLY the tiny wires or are we also cleaning the shafts on which the tiny wires are mounted?
I don't notice any driveability problems and I saw from a C5 Specialist that GM recommended AGAINST GM technicians cleaning the wires. If I am not throwing codes should I still clean the wires after 40K miles and only one re-oil of the filter?

Thanks for your help.
Its ok to clean everything, just be gentle with it. Don't use anything too harsh, rubbing alcohol or carb cleaner on a Q-tip is perfect.
Re: Has anyone cleaned their MAF sensor??? (mozin)
OKAY...
I want to straighten out the topic out. I was having problems with some bogged down acceleration because I suspected that I had K&N oil oversprayed into/onto my MAF, which is why I posted this thread.
If you are not having any bogged acceleration or hesitation in acceleration, don't clean your MAF. I cleaned my MAF after conversing with a CF member, Jimman, and I went ahead and cleaned my MAF, which made my bogging problem go away.
Re: Has anyone cleaned their MAF sensor??? (mozin)
if the filaments on the MAF get coated with anything, then it will be sensing less airflow. this will cause the PCM to lean out. On my road trip back home from Montana a few weeks ago i got quite a bit of noticable pinging during normal accel at freeway speeds. As it turned out, my MAF filaments were coated with the crap they spray on the roads up north to melt snow and ice. i carefully wiped it off with q-tips and IPA. NOTE- CAREFULLY. these thermistors are very thin and distort easily. just wipe gently. all will be good then. anyway, my pinging is fixed
