HP and gearing vs top speed
Here is a post from RC45 over on z06vette that I thought some of you might be interested in...
I'll leave someone else to give you the exact formulae... instead I will show youhow I worked it out - turned out to be a lot more fun than hauling out the old slide rule..
One answer is at least 800hp and 3.73 final drive to pull 6600rpm in 6th gear (within 3 miles of your standing start launch) - which equates to a top speed of 239mph.
Here are the results of my fictional "Best of the best" shootout road test.
The Stage
What we are looking for I am sure, is a streetable car that does what the Ferrari Enzo and McLaren F1 do - go like a bat out of hell.
The scenario I simulated is a 1 mile standing start, with timed intervals at 60mph, 100mph, 1/4 mile and 1 mile.
The next measurement was how much speed is gained over a mile after you have shifted from 5th (at redline) into 6th (After all, top speed needs to be reached in a reasonable distance).
Finally the car is allowed to run flat out from mile marker 2 until the 3rd mile marker (giving you roughly a flying mile of top speed run) and that is taken as the Top Speed.
The cars are assumed to run on stock wheels and tyres, and suspension and with no aerodynamic aids.
Stock transmission ratios are used, with final drive ratios of 3.42, 3.73, 3.90 and 4.10 used for each battery of tests.
The top speed runs take place on a very large test oval with 1 mile straights and 1 mile turns, giving you runs in either direction and one bend for the total 3 mile sprint.
I feel this kind of test gives a true feel for the real world evaluation of all the power available and final drive ratios that can be used.

Before anyone thinks I am the engineer extraodinaire that was able to grab a slide rule and calculate all the above - I simply grabbed Gran Turismo3 for PlayStation2 and hit the test track
