Default Why do i have to baby shift into 3rd when drag racing?

Just returned from doing some drag racing. Every single time I went down the strip I had to either Grind third gear and or slowly shift to third.... Is this normal?

If you know someone with Predator or LS1 Edit you might want to try turning off your CAGS feature.

that has nothing to do with cags.
sounds like you just need to practice unless there is just something wrong with your tranny

Could also be the clutch is out of adjustment even though it only happens going into third.

My solution was to dump the oem shifter if you haven't already. I could never get in sync with it. Installed a kirban and never had the problem again.

I have eliminated the CAGS. I have the ripper shifter and have had lots of practice slamming gears throughout my life. i have also changed to Redline trans fluid.

The clutch is about gone. It smells when I use it too hard. It also has a tendency to only come up half way from the floor during a night of drag racing.

This is sounding like either a clutch and or tranny problem.

It's not CAGS, your clutch is self adjusting, the Ripper should eliminate shifter problems. Could still be several things but my guess is your third gear syncro is worn.

This may sound overly simplistic but...some people have a tendancy to "FIND" third gear..This ends up in disaster most times..

I put my palm on shiftknob open fingers and jam it straight at the dashboard. Never missed it yet..

Interesting sidenote...2nd gear can be had the same way..

It's un-nerving to try at 1st.. but ..when you are ready to go into 2nd gear.. from 1st gear..just pull it straight back fast and hard.. You will be in 2nd!!!
No need to pull it towards your thigh...
Your mind is saying I Know I am gonna hit 4th.. but trust me...

I am of the opinion that the problem lies on your aging clutch assembly.

Could be the clutch, but it's also very likely your third gear synchros are about to check out for good. Don't ask me how I know, but believe me, I do.

This is part of the whole POS clutch slip/can't hit 3rd while DR'n/clutch pedal stuck to the floor issue with pre-2002 cars.

Get a decent aftermarket clutch but make sure you upgrade your slave & m/c to the 2002 part #.

The upgraded slave & M/C fixes it all.

I wish people that have installed aftermarket shifters would quit giving bad advice. Aftermarket shifters will shorten your throw and make driving a manual tranny more fun (and possibly cause premature wear on synchros). They will not correct a problem that is caused by synchros that are already worn or a clutch that is not fully disengaging.

Sorry Red5 but I think your 3rd gear synchro is out....I busted one in my 97. If it is still under warranty you can get it repaired for free.

It was interesting to see what other members thoughts were on this. I am with Schindler, Need For Speed, and the others who said it was the synchro...

I am close to 80,000 miles on this beast and I bought it used. I don't think I have any warranty.

OK, So how do I fix it?

If it is only third gear that is giving you trouble... then I would say something in the trans is bad...

I'm glad to hear someone else is having this problem. 3rd gear only.
I've had a Hurst for about a year. I'm just guessing, but I think it's the clutch.

Third gear is a real bummer for me too, I have upgraded to the CARTEK clutch and went with the new slave as well but sometimes it's like I can't get it in. I dated a girl once....... oh nevermind different story for a different forum. Bob

Since it's only 3rd, I agree it's probably the synchro. :cry
