Gut Cats or Remove?
I am wanting to get rid of my cats, but do not know if I should remove them or gut them. I am afraid if I remove them, then I may get caught in a visual emmisions inspection. Any downfalls to gutting them as opposed to removing them?

gutted mine 2 years ago...never regreted it! I keep some new high-flow ones to throw on if FL starts inspections again.

Just lower your car like mine and no one can get under it enough to check :)
IMO it is worth it. Buddy did it on his 02' Z06 and with just an intake and the X-pipe he has trapped 120-121mph.
I trap almost 111 with just Blackwing, X-pipe and Z06 Ti. Stock I only trapped 106mph.

Good luck in being able to get under the car for the inspection.
In all seriousness, if you are worried about passing the emissions test/inspection, then just leave the damn things alone. Yeah, you could *maybe* snag a whopping 10hp, assuming you have the car re-tuned after removing the cats. (If you don't re-tune, you'll probably *LOSE* hp/torque).
If you just have to do it, get an off-road X-pipe and O2 sims. You'll get turbulent flow if you gut the cuts. Keep the cat system in the garage for when you come around to your senses and are ready to put them back on.
I like that line about "tossing trash out the window." Yup, I agree, it's the same thing.
Please, no aspersions about tree-hugging Californians. I'm a gun-toting, native texan who voted for Reagan and both Bushes and had a porterhouse steak for dinner last night.

Couple of my friends have gutted their cats and have picked up a bunch of power up top. They sound a lot better IMO by just hollowing them out. It gives the exhaust more of an echo and a *glug glug* sound. It sounds great. My friends truck sounds exactly like a monster truck. Not quite as loud, but same sound.

I still don't understand why folks want to remove the CATS? If anything why not replace them with high performance CATS? I hate to sound GREEN but the cost to the enviroment is not worth the few extra HP. There are other ways to find 5HP.
