Default Exhaust Question

Hey guys. I just scheduled my car today to have long tube headers, x-pipe, and cat-back put on. The installer wants $3300 if he orders the parts for me. This would pay for parts, install and everything. This leads me to two questions:

1. Is this a reasonable price? I have looked around and believe I could get the parts for about $2000, so is $1300 reasonable for install?

2. Is this something that I could do myself? I actually worked my way through college as a mechanic, although I never messed with exhaust. Is there any special tools or anything required that I would need?

TIA for any input

Hye sleepie,

Don't you have any friends with a lift? You can do that project in 1 day!
if you pick your parts right, you probably won't need any welding. I would say that amount for labor is a bit too high.

Just my 2 cents. :flag

The only part you may not be able to do without a lift is the stock catback and that's only if you don't want to cut it.

Headers/exhaust is one of the easier jobs to do so, if you're looking to save some scratch and have a bit of fun while you're at it, call a bud, chill some brews and go for it in the garage. Before I knew better, I had an exhaust shop do the catback. Since then, I've replaced the rest of the exhaust in my garage on jackstands and Rhino Ramps.

Thanks for the input guys

No, I don't have access to a lift...just jackstands. Keeping the stock exhaust is not a high priority with me, so I don't mind cutting to get it out. Does anybody know of a thread or website that talks about installation procedures? I've been hunting in the archives but haven't found anything. :seeya

Thanks rcws6, that website is great

I'm starting to lean towards doing this job myself just for the fun of it and I have just one more question for you all. I've decided to go with Corsa x-pipe and cat-back and I know they don't make long tube headers. Does anybody know which headers would match up to this system without welding and still provided good performance? I've heard good things about FLP and TPIS. Would either of these match up? If welding is unavoidable I do have a welder in the family, but I would prefer to do the job myself just for fun :D

I have Corsa Indys and no x-pipe or headers, but I believe (someone correct me if I'm wrong) the connection between the x-pipe and cat outlet is sealed with a clamp. Between the x-pipe and exhaust I believe they flange together. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
