Default 3.15's and a high stall TC

Is there anyone using 3.15's w/ a high stall TC? or a high stall TC w/ 2.73's?
Does the TC swap alone without gears give an improvement compared to gears alone?

I only have had 3.15 stock gears, but with my 3500 Vigilante, it is like another car. My stock ET was 12.73 best in cool air while with the 3500 rpm Vigilante, it was 12.40's in the heat of last summer. A high stall converter is a must for an A4 C5 if you want much improved straight line performance.

I could not agree more, a high stall T/C is a must for an A4 if you want improved performance.

I have ridden in and drove both a car with SY3500 and 3.42's and a car with SY3500 and 3.73's. The 3.73's will put you back much harder, and the pull up thru the gears is fantastic. The main problem is cost. I have a set of 3.42 gears and a SY3500 sitting in the garage if anyone is interested.

email me.

Does this mean you opted for 3.73 + stock TC? I don't remember hearing how things turned out. I must be losing my hearing, memory, or both... :(

I have 3.15's and a PT2800. It was a little loose at first, but I have been driving it since March and I don't even notice it anymore.
As for SOTP difference, well, I get a lot less traction :D

The TC is really noticable from take off. Punching it from 20mph+ and to me it wasn't very noticable. That's where gears are.

I didn't want to switch to higher gears as I like where my RPM's are on the highway.

I had the "not so quick" 2.73 rear & opted to replace with 3.42 rear. I have not lost very much in mpg & at 75mph my Tach is at 2200rpms. The performance increase is awesome throughout the entire spectrum. I still have the stock TC but a high stall TC is third on my mod list. My fun is on the highway just cruising along then punching it :reddevil . I have never been to the 1/4 track but will some day. My concern is traction since I plan to stay with EMTs. I'm leaning towards a 3200 stall TC for my 3.42 A4.

IMHO, if you want to go to the track on a regular basis, then HS TC is the first A4 mod for you. I've read on the Corvetteforum where some stayed with the 2.73 & added 3000 stall TC. However, if you do alot of highway driving and seldom go to the track, then 3.42 rear swap is a good choice. Better yet, if you have the $$$ get the 3.42 rear & 3200 or 3500 stall TC at the same time.

Either way, if you are into performance mods the 2.73 rear alone lacks the quickness most desire.

Good luck :seeya

If you get a stall with a higher "STR" rating it will hit the tires much harder and make up for the lack of gearing and it wont feel soo loose off the line.

For max performance, obviously 3.73s would be better but due to cost I am just gonna stay with my 2.73s and get an ST-3500 or SS3600 :)

I had 3.15's and a SY3500, then changed to 3.73's. SOTP really isn't much more because of the lack of traction on the street. As far as E.T.'s go, it's only a slight gain, less than a tenth. When you upgrade gears alone, you may get more than a tenth, but if you already have a high stall converter, you'll see much less of a gain. The torque converter alone can take off a half second, it did in my case.
The car also felt very loose with 3.15's and the SY3500. It wasn't enough to bother me, but I could see it bothering most. If I put the car in D, it still felt like it was in neutral till I hit the gas. :D If you want to upgrade your TC alone, make sure you go with a high STR(will make it feel tighter), and stay below a 3600 stall.

Yep, I tried to find a PT2400 but could not. Even Joe told me it would be 5 -7 days to get one to me. I already had been waiting for close to a month for the install appointment. So at the end I went for the 3.73s and a Blackwing.
I am very happy with the differance. It pulls strong in every gear. And gas mileage only dropped about 2 mpg. I still will have to drive it for awhile to try it out more. At this time I would do it again in a sec. I would of liked to put in a PT2400 at the same time. Maybe next year. The way it drives now, I don't know if I will need it. :D Instant response! :auto:

So I have a set of 3.42's and a SY3500 sitting in the garage that are forsale.

I'm running the 3.15 with the PT2900. I'm actually still trying to find out the STR on this thing. When I read up on PT website it said they only offer the 2400 and 2800 but do custom ones. I bought it from a forum member, but havent got to talk with him lately, but anyway. I had 2.73 and it was horrible. Bone stock down to the filter was 13.65 @ 102. I added the TC and gears at the same time with a couple of other minor things and got in to the high high 12's. Now I have some 3.42's waiting on install. I find the 3.15 seem to give up after third gear on the track...These times are in the summer in South LA. That says enough about the weather. Those SY3500 actually have a lower STR that the stock convertor. If you want dead stop take off power then get high stall TC.. if you want pulling power in every gear get some gears..

I am running a Yank 3000 with a 2.0 STR. This is with my 3.15. The setup is great. From a stop, I can light up both rear tires without any "power braking" and when the transmission shifts to second gear, it will break traction again. I was also considering a stage II heads and cam but I am so pleased with the power I have now, I have put the heads and cam on the back burner.... I made a fuel consumption check last month and averaged 28 MPG on a trip to and from Tucson, which included a small amount of in town driving. For me, its the best of both worlds, Power and economy in one setup....

I am running a 3.73 gear with a stock TC.The car pulls strong in every gear and you get instant throttle response. I picked up a half second in et with just the gear change.

yankeevetteconvert, thanks for the info on how your car drives.
I love the 3.73's with the stock TC.
I did make the mistake of doing a 2nd to 1st WOT while changing lanes.
Did not do that any more. I just had Nitto's put on tonight.
I will have to see if they hold better than the Run Craps. :jester
Not sure if the Blackwing made a differance since it was put on at the same time, but it sure sounds nice at WOT. :D
