Default Broke my FLP's. DOH!

All part of the game I suppose. FWIW, the new FLP's supposedly address this tab tearing issue. Unfortunatly I had an older set. DOH! The Vclamps are a bit scraped and speed bumps do catch on them from time to time, so maybe that caused abnormal stress on the tab. <shrug> Who knows.

Wow!!!! Are FLP that crappy? I have not heard of other heades like TTS or TIPS have any of the problems FLP is having; or having any problems at all. I sure hope FLP takes care of you.

This is at least the 3rd time I've heard of this happening. Not good. :skep:

Any word from FLP about this, Jon?

I'm trying to get in touch with my vendor first. Hopefully they will call be back today.

I may just have the other tab chopped off and I'll weld up the huge hole. I dunno.

Mine haven't cracked at the weld yet.

However, the drivers side DID crack at the bolt!

Has this happened to anyone else and would a large washer under the bolt prevent it from happening again?

Godspeed, I actually just called you guys about the track day. I was trying to see if I could pay on saturday, but now...its looking like I wont be going with this broken header.

I'd get some nice stainless steel headers, but they are well beyond my budget. :(

I hope so too, just waiting for thunder racing to get back with me first to see if they can talk with FLP for me, or if I need to go direct to FLP.

Does FLP send you replacements first, then you can send your bad ones back? The car is my daily driver...its how I get to work.

FLP started gusseting the brackets because of this problem. There is a thread about a recent install and you can see the difference from the pics.

I have a very early set as well and had the same thing happen -the entire bracket to header weld failed on the driver's side. MTI took care of me and gusseted both brackets themselves. No more problems here.

Are the brackets even needed? Seems like it'd be fine to just chop them off and run without them. F-bodies don't have any mounting brackets down there.

That might be worth a try but judging from the distance between the remaining hard-mounts -heads and rear of mid-pipe- you might have to deal with random leaks from the mid-pipe flanges. Maybe vibration as well. It certainly would be a quick fix tho...a lot easier than pulling the header out to repair it.

Well, FLP recommended I get it welded up and spray paint it with high temp paint, so I'm just going to do that tomorrow and have the other tab cut off at the same time.

They did offer to replace the header as well, so they get credit for that, but they need my broke header back first before they can send a new one.....not so good for a car that gets me to work every day. Ah well. Pay to play.

Why do they need the broke header back first?

They can't do a core charge or have your credit card number on file until they get the original part back or something?

The tabs should not be stressed when bolted up. Loosen the bracket first and add washers under the tab if needed. I also noticed the v clamps need to be tightened again after driving a while. That coiuld cause extra stress.

The headers scrape 1-2 times a week since the Vclamps hang down as the lowest part, and Mitch at FLP thinks that the scraping is what is causing the stress on the tabs. Sounds like a good theory to me.

My headers were installed properly, as I did it myself. You can see on my website that I recommend loosening the mount for those tabs, and that is indeed what I did when installing mine. May be time to just find some headers that don't hang as low.

JMX, I was responding to H82BFST and his question about the bolt. So defensive.

Eh? I'm not being the least bit defensive. I'm just saying how they were installed to avoid confusion on this instance of failure.
