If shifter rattle is caused by the Hurst shifter stops is it safe to remove them entirely.
If tests lead me to conclude that shifter rattle is somewhat caused by the Hurst shifter stops is it safe to remove them entirely?
I finally got tired of the rattling on my Hurst so today I completely removed the shifter stops. Most, if not all, the rattle has disapeared. I've read on this forum before that the Z06 transmission has internal stops and the Hurst stops are not necessary. Is this true or am I asking for trouble.
Oh and yes I had tried everything before, weights, tape, soundproofing, adjustments, you name it.
You see, the way you asked the question, there is only one answer. NO, you do not need them. However, lot's of us Hurst owners kept them in just to make sure. :yesnod: :D
I see your point. Perhaps I should have phrased it more like this
If tests lead me to conclude that shifter rattle is somewhat caused by the Hurst shifter stops is it safe to remove them entirely.
I don't think that will fit in the subject line but I can try.
I am going to break from the trend here and say yes you do need them. The stock shifter has a rubber boot, that when shifting hard and fast, will soften the load transmitted to the transmission internal stops. With the Hurst, this rubber boot is not present and the stops are the only thing that will prevent a hard impact on the transmission internal stops. I think they should stay in.

Yes, my mn6 rattles since I put the Hurst in. I'm sure it's the stops but I don't mind the rattle. Sometimes I really pound the gears (power shifting) and i like knowing the stops are there even if the tranny has them also. :yesnod:
Re: Hurst shifter stops is it safe to remove them entirely.
1. The shifter has a rattle anyway....even without the stops. (Experience talking)
2. Yes, the transmission has internal stops BUT they can be damaged if you slam the gears. (Experience talking)
3. The major problem with the Hurst stops occur when they are not adjusted properly or they vibrate out of adjustment. (This has been reported by many.)
Recommendation:
Install the stops properly, use the locktite and bang against a bolt in the $150 shifter versus banging against the internal stop in a transmission that will run $800 in labor alone just to get at. Make sure you adjust it properly and you will be set. The Hurst was one of my favorite mods bar none. (I couldn't afford the next level.)
Re: Hurst shifter stops is it safe to remove them entirely. (Pilot135R)
My Hurst has never vibrated or rattled or anything else. But I like to follow instructions unless there is a proven reason not to, so I kept them in. I've had the stops in now for about 20K+ miles without a problem. I like the idea of knowing that they are there...even if for just backup security.
Re: If shifter rattle is caused by the Hurst shifter stops is it safe to (John's vette)
NO need, they will only create problems later, trust me :cuss
I disagree very strongly with this statement, as was posted earlier in this thread, if installed properly they will not create problems later. And I also disagree that the stops make the shifter noisy. My shifter was noisy, I went to an aftermarket aluminum **** and it was wisper quiet. I then changed ***** because I didn't like the new ***** looks and installed a Delrin Hardbar ****. The Delrin has made the shifter somwwhat noisy again, but I loved the **** so much, I put up with the noise. Now I don't even notice it all.
