Well here goes the count down . I hope this steering column lock problem is fixed. I took my 2000 4A into the dealer today and they installed a new lock plate and relay. The dealer said that the old wire harness was routed wrong at the factory causing the wire to the lock to some times short out and lock the column. The replacement harness is routed in a different way. They had checked my VIN number and my car was in the middle of the of VIN numbers that were on this list of bad wire harness done at the factory. Part number 88952427 Harness K $114.04, 26056108 Nut $8.04, Labor 2 HRS. 126.00
I sure hope this is the end of this problem. :skep:
In the event that the dealer fix does not and you find yourself steering column locked, I learned a system trick that will save you ( apologies if you already know this one)...but when the steering column lock goes into fail mode it can be reset on the spot allowing the car to be driven to the dealer, or home as in my case where I replaced the module itself.
Once the lock has set and with the engine running in PARK or NEUTRAL pull fuse #25 from the BCM power box for 15+ seconds. Viola! The lock opens and stays open as long as the Vette remains running. Replace fuse #25 ( a diagram on the inside of the power box lid details which fuse is which) and off you go.
The BCM power box is located under the passenger side floor plate...just lift the mat, pop the two clips, the power box is the black one.
There is a white fuse puller in the under hood power box that will come in handy if you don't have a Leatherman or needle nose handy. It is definitely nice not to be stuck.
GM recalled 00 vettes serial #01 to 16233 for column lock problem on the A4 cars they effectively disabled the lock.If your car falls in this range the lock should now be disabled. The recall expired 7/03/03
You don't know how glad I am to hear this. I was really getting paranoid, I didn't want to go any where too far away from home, in fear I would have to let my car set some where over night, that it shoudn't be. That's NOT what driving a Corvette is all about.
