Default What gain from changing the headers and cats?

Does anyone have the horsepower figures for what is gained by changing the headers and cats to long tube headers and high-flow cats? I already have a Blackwing and Stingers, but am wondering if headers are worth the cost.

I have a stock LS1. I had my Corsa's, VaraRam, smooth airbridge coupler, and Corsa Xpipe. I dyno'ed at 316rwhp and 322rwtq. I put the headers on with the midsection, plugs and wires, and the LS6 manifold and dyno'ed at 347rwhp and 356rwtq. I started ripping those 295's in second with 3:42's. Now I have to get a tune to bring out some more hp/tq and mostly to get the engine running cleaner. Hope to pick up around 10-12hp from that.Headers were worth it, considering that if you get anything performance oriented later on, you will need headers pretty soon anyway.

depending on which LT and high flow cats you use you can expect from 20 up to 40rwhp.

I had a reputable tuner tell me that a stock, to high flow, cat changeout was only good for 5-6 hp. If that's true, it hardly seems worth it.

Headers are a very worthwhile mod. And eventually you will need to do them as you strive to squeeze ever more power from the engine. Best overall bang-for-the-buck mod as a standalone, though, especially on an MN6, is gears IMO.

I just good Kooks LTs and cats too. Car pulls harder for sure, but no dyno yet. After driving a malibu for a week (re-ring) it makes it hard to really feel the full difference, but I can tell it's there.

I went from 292 RWHP/302 RHTQ to 324 RWHP/329 RWTQ with FLP headers/high flow cats and their x-pipe. I had a Blackwing and Corsa Indy's when I dyno'd in at 292. My AFR's were horrible dropping to 10.5:1 at 5200 RPM's.

After the headers (and no tuning) my AFR's were right at 12.5:1 from 5000 to 6000 PRM's. So the headers leaned out my car. On the other hand if I was "in tune" or lean I guess adiing the headers would have leaned me out even more and that's not good either.

So I cured my problem w/o tuning and saw a nice big gain of 32 RWHP with FLP's headers. Well worth the $1425 I paid.

Good luck

Tom

BTW, nice Sig PIC.
Traded my 2002 NHRA SE TransAm, M6 in for the 2001 C5 Coupe, A4 that I have now. Too bad I could not afford to have both. However, just this past week I bought a 1997 Chevy Malibu to be my daily driver. Now, my is a weekend warrior
