Default A/C always comes on... Why?

Newbie with a question... Everytime I put on the 'vent' the A/C (and light)always comes on. :mad Sometimes I like to cruise with the roof off and a little vent air from the dash. Even in the dead of winter when I put the heat on the A/C comes on. Turning this off knocks off the climate control. Unfortuatly, I do not have a manual. Does anyone else have this problem and can it be changed? Thank you all

Not sure if I can help, but I'll try. My a/c comes on evrytime I start my car (above 45F) because of my memory setting, this can be easily changed if it is a problem, just re-save memory with a/c off. As for a/c on in the winter, that should only happen in "defrost" mode, not on any other setting. Another possible cause, you have your a/c & heater controls set to "auto". Hope this helps?

The AC compressor will kick in when in AUTO mode. In the winter, the AC will show on in DEFROST mode. If the outside temp is below around 36F it will not go on.

In the summer, if you want to cruise with the top off and want some vent air, then you have to put it in full MANUAL mode:

- Turn TEMP dial to 60F (minimum setting).
- Set MODE to anything other than Windshield Vent (top).
- Set Fan Speed manually.
- Set Intake to Outside (vs. Recirc).

If you hit only one of the above settings, the others don't default to a normal setting so manually setting each is the best way to get it the way you want.

The way I have done it is to turn the system off and then turn it on by pushing vent. Usually the A/C will come on when I do that but one push of the A/C button turns off the compressor and I can run without it until I start the car again.

In the winter time it is good to have your A/C compressor run as often as possible since that keeps it from going bad. They do not like to sit still for long periods of time.

I just purchased my 2000 Vert in April and a factory video came with it. The video says that it is normal for the AC to come on, even in cold weather when the heater is on. Apparently it helps remove condensation from the air so that the windows never fog up. You can override the system by going with the manual controls.

Unfortunatley, that's the system we are stuck with. I have the same frustration and hope GM has fixed the system on the C6. As for the owners manual, go to http://www.helminc.com for a reprint. They also have downloadable pdf versions. Corvette Forum also has hard copy manuals available.
