I post this in the Gen forum as well, but didnt really get any detailed replys so ill try here! Can anyone explain what kind of lift is good for as LS1 and the diff between 512 and 566??? I see all these numbers when cams are talked about but I have no clue how to read them to real world numbers, and what they all are?
I am thinking about getting a cam installed for my 99FRC over the winter also want LS6 intake long tubes and tune, but I really dont know anything about cams I am looking at this
I want a streetable CAM but not something so mild that I only get 15hp my vette is not my DD and I dont mind the loss in mpg.
can someone tell me if this is a good cam mild wild, what kind of HP am I looking at with something like this?? And any general info about cams?
Thanks!
Jason
There's a huge thread over at LS1Tech.com that'll asnwer a few questions ... Well it probably will make you think of a few more...
Keep in mind, the camshaft is the brain of the engine so be very careful what you choose to go with. You could be creating a brain dead engine if you just follow the lemmings and drop in the "standard" 224 type cam most tend to buy. It may not be the best choice for "your" particular combination.
Just don't fall for the hype. Timing events are the key to a camshaft's success or failure. And there's more to those numbers than some random XXX* duration at .050" spec or a certain lobe separation.
Get good info before you drop a dime or spend the time...
Go check out the www.ls1howto.com site. They have a section called "dyno" , it shows different stages of a car being modified. At the finish of each mod, he dyno's and records the results. If you really notice the cam 218/224 LSA 114 VS cam 224/224 LSA 112, you will notice that there was really no significant change. The smaller cam appearedto have a better low-end hp and tq. curve for street use as compared to the "hotter" cam. Incidentally, the cam I am using is a 218/224 @ .552.569 on a 115 LSA. It has very good street manners ans can be used for a S/C setup in the future.
