I guess not much changed between the 2004 date of the original post and today.

I also had this problem when changing alternators. I am not 100% positive how the system is circumvented, exact wire configuration, but it looks fairly simple to get around the "charge system fault" message when changing alternators. The alt I purchased from DC Power has a pigtail that is actually missing one of the original wires and has a jumper from one to the other on the 4 wire plug. I am not near my car now but from what I remember it's not really complicated. I have a 300 amp alt charging 3 batteries through a Perfect Switch power gate. By nature I get the charge system fault at initial start-up for about 5 seconds then it's gone. This is caused by the switching fets in the isolator before it sends a "exciter" signal to my alt.

I can only assume that the so called "replacement" alts that are sold for the car are not set up internally for that extra wire on the C5 pig tail. And I believe that is where the problem comes in.

From what I have been told it's very easy to get rid of that error with HP Tuners.

Default Charging System Fault

So, I know this is an old thread, but I wanted to add a couple of thoughts.

First is the fact that even an AC Delco “Factory Rebuilt” alternator causes the same code to set. I put the following alternator in my 200,000-mile 99 C5 a few nights ago and immediately got the Charging System Fault message. (The reason I replaced it was I suspected the diodes were allowing a steady discharge of the battery while parked.)

This is what I put in it:
AC Delco Professional Rebuilt PN 334-1280

I read some of the other threads on this issue and noted the ability, with the proper tools, to program the applicable module to stop reporting the code. So I can only assume that this is a common practice at dealerships any time they install a rebuilt alternator, because I really doubt they repair the original alternators.

The “fresh” alternator also doesn’t show a cruise charge of more than 13.8 volts on the DIC, and when I put a full load on it yesterday on my way home from work (High Beams, High Speed A/C, and rear defroster all on at the same time) it dropped to 13.1/13.2

Last night I verified with my Fluke 87 meter that the diodes are in fact bad in my original, so I ordered a new bridge rectifier and voltage regulator for my original alternator. Here is what I found for a source:

http://store.alternatorparts.com/ipr...lternator.aspx

http://store.alternatorparts.com/part-m526.aspx

Good luck to everyone with these alternators.
Steve

Porxter,

I hate to be the bearer of bad news however, you are getting that message because you put an aftermarket alternator in your corvette, not the OE GM alternator. AC Delco has two different lines of parts: GM OE Parts and AC Delco "Professional" Parts (I use this term quite loosely). The GM OE Parts are provided by the original manufacturer or GM's designated replacement supplier that has been through all of the engineering and review process. AC Delco's "Professional" line is an Aftermarket supplier that meets AC Delco's price and lesser quality standards for this line. This is why YOU MUST be careful when going to either a dealership or an aftermarket parts store, most times they either do not know or do not care about this difference and do not tell the customer (Also the dealerships have a greater margin, as well as parts stores, on the "Professional" parts). There are a few ways to tell what you are getting for example most internal OE GM part numbers DO NOT start with 19XXXXXX , these are normally indicating an aftermarket "equivalent" part (I say normally because there are some OE parts that start this way). Also the AC Delco website will tell you which parts are which:

ACDELCO GM ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT

This is the reason that i tell most people not to but AC Delco parts from advanced auto parts - all are the "Professional" Line. KOI auto parts is one of the few parts stores left that carry the OE GM AC Delco line.

Another Example: Spark Plug wires, all AC Delco "Professional" Wires start with a "9" where OE does not:

From 97-2000 they used a 110amp one with P/N 10246634

From 2001-2002 on Manual cars they used the 110amp 10246634 also.

From 2001-2002 on Automatics they used a 110 amp 10316182 since they used a decoupler.

Does nobody notice that this thread was started when the C5 was 'Current Generation?'

Well, pretty close at least. I suppose the 2005's were out then.

Let the zombie thread die.

Nobody cares how old it is. Clearly this information is still being confused. I will post a picture of the part number and part that I receive. I found a local OEM remanufactured so I will be returning the new one.

Why does an old thread bother you? It's relevant information. There are still a lot of C5 cars out there and they are getting older and experiencing problems. Like mine. Which is why I'm here, reading and participating in this thread. Which is neither dead nor irrelevant.

In this thread it is stated that you could get rid of the code with HPtuners. I didn't find this dtc from the software's list so it can't be disabled.

I also have a newer 2004 (automatic) 140 A alternator with decoupler in my (manual) '99 so I would like to know a way to get rid of the code without having to replace a good alternator.

Try opening the system settings and uncheck the F and/or L terminal options. The L terminal will still work to energize the alternator but the terminals won' be monitored once they are unchecked.

I remember when I had this issue. It was because they gave me a alternator for a auto.

I finally tested this. Unfortunately I still get that fault text even if I put both L and F terminal monitoring of with hptuners.

I just bought a new alternator from autozone and now get this message, frankly it doesn't bother me. I would rather have a strong and reliable alternator @ 14.9 volts, then be stranded from the valeo because it was weak and old. I now have ample voltages at the battery 14.4 normal cruzing and drops to 14.29 with lights on. I would get 13.5 volts charging with lights on at the battery on the original valeo. I went thru 2 batteries with the valeo alternator because the charge was not enough, when resting. My ignition switch was fine and starter terminals were all clean. GM should of put an higher output alternator in their from the start. just my opinion.
