Default Why are they so stiff ?!!!!!

The C5 aftermarket short throw shifters -that is.
I have had aftermarket short throws in other cars and the C5s seem to be a lot stiffer than any other cars out there. What's up with that Homies?

My friends in his Z06 is like that. He as a B&M. I just cut down my stock one and love it. If you can go withou tfor a week I will do yours for free. The only downside to cutting down is a slight rattle when accelerating sometimes. Stops as soon as you touch the shifter though.

I think the manufacturers believe all corvette owners have super human attributes, and rightfully so! That's just a theory I heard.

I am not sure if my Hurst got looser over time, or I got stronger (I am guessing number 1). But, it isn't bad at all.

The shift linkage adds the stiffness I think. I wish my Camaro's shifter was as stiff, but it's mounted to the top of the tranny and has no linkage, so there's less resistance.

The linkage remains the same.. The Aftermarket shifter is designed to be tighter at all the pivot points for precise shifting.. The OEM shifter is sloppy by comparison because it is not a precision piece of equipment. The shorter throw requires more force because it is just that, Shorter!. So with more force required to shift and precise shifting points, its going to feel stiffer. I've had my B& M ripper for four years and I still smile with every shift..the difference between an OEM shifter and an after market shifter, is like the difference between a Timex and a Rolex, they both tell time..
But the Rolex is a precision piece of equipment with 28 jewels at all the pivot points.
Or cheap audio speakers comparied to Quality speakers, they both deliver sound, but the quality speakers deliver the sound without distortion.

Just because the shifter is precise and short-throw, why does it mean that it needs to be stiff? BMW's and Acura's have some of the shortest throw shifters on a production car and they operate like a dream without having to muscle the shifter. Why are these after market shifters so stiff?

Looks like this still needs clarification; The aftermarket shifters are not "stiff" in amongst themselves. Before you installed it in the car, did the mechanism have any drag / resistance? No, of course not. It's simple geometry.. The reason the stock shifter is so long has to do with mechanical leverage. You have to realize that a V8 w/ 400HP will never have a transmission with a light linkage (heavy forks in the trans, sliding heavy gears into place, etc.) So GM made the stock shifter long enough to compensate. When you undo GM's engineering (i.e. short throw shifter), you can't expect it to have the same light-effort properties.

just about everything you do in the aftermarket modification area is a trade-off, you sacrifice in one area to gain in another. suspension upgrades give better cornering at the expense of ride quality, headers give power at the expense of quiet, gears give accelleration at the expense of fuel economy and top end speed. I could go on and on but I think you get the point. An aftermarket shifter is what it is: more precise at the expense of increased shift effort. My advice would be to install a B&M ripper shifter, get a Bowflex machine, and rip up some gears!
