The shift fork change (from Al to Steel) was around mid-03 production so I'd say you most probably have Al forks.

My 02 Z06 had an aluminum shift fork.

I replaced it when I had my trans upgraded this past April:

My 02' had aluminum shift forks and when I got my tranny rebuilt, under warranty, they put a steel one in it.

Default Anyone know the Vin # changeover to Steel forks in '03?

I've been around the circle on this question several times. Appears the change was sometime in Dec /02/ - Jan/03. Consensus is that it was after the FFS fuel system change. However, no one has been able to come up with the definitive date or VIN.

I've asked this question too and all I've been able to determine is around mid-03 production. My '03 Z does have the FFS but I have no idea if I've got steel shift forks. I'd sure like to know.

This is why i bought an 04. The suspension is a little different too. But for your question, what sux is that the forks are not that expensive but the labor of it all is gonna hurt. If you can get someone to do it for under $400 labor then i think that is pretty decent.

I suppose that my 02 has aluminum forks but I have not had any trouble with the transmission or anything else for that matter. The car has 22,000 miles.

I am in the market and have driven an '04 and an '02. The '02 had 21K on it and the shifting was noticably more labored than in the '04. I figured it had a slight tweak in the fork or was going to need a slave in the near future.

If you don't mind me asking, what does it cost to have the synchros replaced? Thanks!

As this might be relevant in this thread, I had my AL replaced with steel on my '03 when they removed the tranny to replace the torque tube (major rattling at idle, not the basic rattle everyone gets)...anyway, since this job (done by Dealer under warranty) the reverse lockout no longer functions (have done 2 good grinds fast shifting 4-5), do you think I should take this up with the Dealer? What is my recourse?

Any thoughts would be apprecitated. Cheers.

Neil,

I would address the reverse lockout with whoever fixed your tranny. It can be fixed without removing the tranny (could be the solenoid is not reconnected). Otherwise, a good dealer tech can fix it.
