Default dealer chrging to do column lock second time around?

Ok i just bought a 99 frc so its the m6 and i had it about 2 weeks and as im driving down the road the service column lock comes up but it didnt stop me from driving the rest of the way home. anyways, i call the dealer and they tell me the recall was already done 2 years ago and that if they had to do it again or it was failing that it would be out of my pocket. now why is that since its there fix that didnt work. its still a recall. what can i do about this so it doesnt end up costing me a bunch of money. i saw the clb idea but it seems a lot easier to do if the recall wasnt already done so seems i just need the dealer to sor things or what.thanks

they are screwing you. It does not cost anything but I would never have a dealer touch my car, they will just F it up. Put the CLB on it

I would probably do the CLB as others reccommend but, at the same time, I would be tempted to notify the Highway Patrol and the NHTSA about the dealer. The column lock problem is a safety recall mandated by the NHTSA.

Check the Column Lock sticky in the TECH section for GM's position.

Just install the CLB - best money you will spend.

I was just searching for some info on the wonderful "service column lock" problem. My 2002 Z06 M6 is doing it now only I don't have the privilage of still driving it. So it's basically a trophy sitting in the garage at this point, at least I can start it and hear it. What mine does is cut off the fuel after I go over 1.5 mph but the column is not locked. I did find out that mine previously had the recall done by the prior owner (which makes sense based on the recall and what it's doing). Ordered the CLB but am really wondering if that is going fix the problem or am I still going to have to bring it into the dealer. I pulled off the following diagnotic codes AO-LDCM B2282-H, B2284-H, U1064-H & A1-RDCM B2283-H, B2285-H, U1064-H. I know the H after all the codes means they are all older codes so I'm not so sure any of those relate to this problem. I do however know that four of those codes relate to a lower battery and that is one of the main factors that causes the "steering column lock" problem to occur. So this possible could have led up to this problem.

What I am asking is...can anyone give me some reassurance that the CLB is going to fix my problem without having to take the car to the stealership?

Does the steering column still lock when you shut off the engine and remove the key?

A dealer told me that the recall was done on my '04 Z06 when he looked up my VIN. But, when I park the car, the column does lock.

Don't think you have any issues, but check this link out and verify each code and its meaning.

crazy8s and jac1979, here's my 2 cents worth...

After seeing literally hundreds of posts on CL problems, not once have I seen a post where installling a CLB has caused any major problems. I have seen several folks with earlier year C5s report that they started getting intermittant 'Pulll Key' messages after installing CLBs, but removing and re-inserting the key clears that message up in every case I can remember.

So, given that I would suggest that you both try the CLB and see if your problems end - if not it is just as easy to remove the CLB as it was to install it - it just plugs in so there are no alterations. If it does clear up your problems, then you're all set - if not, you're only out of an hour or so of your time and the cost of the CLB.

I have a 99 FRC also, I had the exact same problem as you (twice). To solve your problem get a clb, to waste time and $, take it to the dealer.

No my column has not locked since I owned the car, I thought that was part of the recall for the steering column not to lock. That is why they reprogram the computer to shut off the fuel after you go 1.5 mph. But who knows I'm sure the jokers at the stealerships don't all follow the recall as is published by Chevy.

Thanks 8vette7 for the info, that's kind of what I figured but out of all the posts I have read no one actually said that.
