i never seen Z06 in my life, i just read about it on the magazines, i just want to know whats faster a ZR-1 or the Z06 top speed
have any of you who owns Z06 raced a Zr-1 ?
how different the braking , handling, ..etc between Z06 & ZR-1 ?

This subject can get pretty heated. The facts are that the ZR1 has the faster top speed, this is not a matter of power but of gearing. In just about every other category the Z06 is superior; handling, braking, 0-60, quarter mile - you name it. The Z06 is about 300 pounds lighter than the ZR1. Dave Hill, the current Chief Engineer for Corvette, wrote "quickest Vette yet" on my Z06 hat at Carlisle last summer. The father of the ZR1 was sitting next to him and did not argue.

The video of the ZR1 passing the Z06 is not conclusive as to which car is faster. The guy in the Z06 was not willing or capable of staying in front, in fact he waives the ZR1 past.

My sig doesn't claim which car is faster, just that one passed the other. The wave by was because it was a DE event, if someone comes up behind you like that you're supposed to wave them by at the next passing zone. The faster car (driver) can't pass until waved by. If the faster car passes without being signaled or the slower car doesn't give a signal the offender gets a black flag. It's designed to prevent car-on-car contact. In the situation you referenced in my video I have no doubt that if we swapped cars I still would've been the one doing the passing, but I think the cars in this case were basically equal. :cheers:

MY 2002 Z06

The Z06 driver was obviously a beginner. I rougly timed the ZR1's lap at 2:14:00 or so. My stock (except for donaldson) 2001 was able to turn 2:05:00 in traffic and being held up.

I have timed a buddies 2001 Z06 on Hoosiers run 1:56:00 or around that figure. I haven't been to TWS since getting my 2002, so I can't compare yet on that regard.

At any rate. The Z06 and ZR1 are both great cars, so much so, it probably is totally due to driver which one is quicker around a road course.

That's what I was getting for lap times, about 2:15. That was my first time out, same for the Z06 I passed. We both had identical seat time. My second trip I was down closer to 2:04 (kumhos and light traffic) or so, but I forgot my camera. The second day I lost a hose clamp and cooked my motor, I just got it all back together. I put a stock '91 motor w/ 13K miles on it in this time, I'm going to build the original motor a little hotter (500 HP or so) and swap them when I get done. I'm sure that will probably slow me down at first, take a little while to get used to the extra power and keep it smooth.

I go back to TWS again in May, we'll see how much more I can shave off. Fastest cars last time I went were two vipers that both ran about 1:56's. The fastest Z06 was instructor driven (his car) to a 1:58. There we're no experienced drivers with ZR-1s. None of those cars are what a purist would call stock, but all had the stock engine w/o forced induction (I.E. bolts ons only).

Let me start by saying I have no interest in starting a pissing match, I'm just trying to figure this one out. I probably have mis-information on the gearing in the Z06, but my understanding is that the MN12 has the same top gears (4,5,6) as the MN6 in the base C5. That puts 5th at .75:1, correct? That's the same tranny ratio as 5th in a ZR-1 (or any 6spd C4 for that matter)? I know the ratio on the C4 ZF-6 is .75:1, I'm not sure on the Z06 so read that as a question. It is also my understanding that the Z06 has the same rear axle ratio as a stock C5 6spd, 3.42:1. Again, that's a question not a statement. The manual shift C4s have 3.45:1 from the factory, or basically the same exact rear axle ratio as the C5.

I also think the C4 drag coefficient is 0.34, it's .29 on the C5 coupe and like .31 on the Z06, so the Z06 should have better aerodynamics than the ZR-1. I admittedly don't know the CD on a ZR-1, I don't know if it would be better or worse than a base C4 with the ZR-1 having a wider rear end.

So why is the ZR-1 faster on the top end? They both have the same (nearly) power ratings, certainly not far enough apart to justify a 5-10 MPH difference in top end. I remember reading an article soon after the C5 came out (I bought a '98 MN6 in late '97, so I had a pretty good interest level) where Lingenfelter was quoted as saying the C4 was more aerodynamically stable at speeds approaching 200 MPH, but stable is not the same thing as drag. I don't remember the article, it was most likely in Car and Driver. And it seems he doesn't have a problem with it (C5 aerodynamic stability at warp) now, but he does add ground effects to some of his high-powered C5s.

Is GM lying to us about the CD on the hard top? Maybe their test drivers don't push as far (distance) on top end runs as they used to?

Again, no pissing contest wanted or intended, I'm just wondering what I'm missing.

As you can see the Z06 despite it's higher redline (6600 rev limiter setting) will max out in 5th (top speed) before the standard C5.

Cool. That explains it. I did not know that the upper gears were changed as well, I thought just the low gears. Learn something new every day. Too bad they didn't make 6th a .68 were it would've been usable. I guess CAFE wouldn't let them get away with that.

91mongoose i guess you are right ZR-1 is more stable, i dont know why still corvette owners i guess ignore that Chevrolet recalled 97 C5 because of susp problem because i heard C5 is not stable after 140mph !!

I've owned 3 C5s including a 97; the C5 does not have stability problems - at any speed. Here is the recall information and it had nothing to do with stability (unless the tie rod actually broke which was very, very rare). By the way, this kind of thing is not uncommon in the first year of production.

The ZR-1 has another 1000 rpm to turn above the Z06's redline. I cant recall the exact # but I think it is in the mid 7000's.....can anybody confirm?

I think the Zr-1's Redline at 7100. The Zr-1 is faster on the top end. Z06 in 5th gear at 6600 (FCO) is 175 mph the Zr-1 can do 180-182. If you raised the rev limit the Z06 would do over 180, because it pulls to 175 no problem. In a Drag race the Z06 is quicker but on the highwayfrom 50 the Z06 will pull the Zr-1 up to about 155 then the Zr-1 starts to wind up and wiil eventually pass the Z06. The Kill section has been fighting this war for a while, check out the videos of us at our Mexican test track. I'm in the Z06 carrying the camera man. Also look at the vid where I dont have a pass, titled Freakz vs 8388 vs Z06. http://www.racingfreaks.net the server is slow because of the # of hits

The LT5 redlines at 7200 and willingly pulls all the way. With a stock engine car it really doesn't make sense to rev past 6500 because the power peak is at 5800. You can go past that point if you wanna hold a gear before a corner instead of shifting, that's where the high redline is nice.

That L O N G pull will help you win races, too. I ran against a slightly modified(loud exhaust) '01 Mustang Cobra last weekend and beat him soundly because he had to shift 1-2 while I had 1500 rpm to go. You pick up 1-2 carlengths and it really demoralizes your opponent. It's cool hitting 83 mph in second or 115 in third, too! :D

The Z06 is actually a couple of inches wider at the rear than a ZR1 - a freind of mine has several vettes, and of course one ZR1 and one Z06 - we had to measure, that ZR1 wide-rear looked wider, but the Z06 is a little bit wider.

ZR1 is the faster by several mph (172 for the Z06 to 177 for the ZR1 is what I remember seeing...that could be off a few mph).

Either will do the speed limit with aplomb. :D
