Default Front license plate cover question

I bought my car used and it didn't come with the Corvette front plate so I ordered one and just got it in. Obviously it slides up and into the bumper and then you screw it with the two screws on the bottom.

My question is how rigid is this supposed to be? It seems like I has a lot of flex if I push it at the top or the middle. I can push down on the top of it and actually pull the top out of the bumper.

Is there supposed to be extra reinforcement or something to keep it more solid?

Thanks.

I have no idea but its a great question. I just bought an 04 C5Z Z16 and it has the plate cover in place. How does one remove it? I'll have to check it out.

Did you get a GM OEM cover from the dealer, or some kind of aftermarket cover? The OEM cover on my 2002 seems pretty solid.

An OEM cover will not slide out on its own. Even if I push mine down from the top, the little tabs keep it in place and prevent it from coming out.

Do you have it screwed in tight?

Mine is the exact same way; it's nothing to worry about.

Thanks. It was aftermarket. GM wants too much for them and they don't come painted. It won't slide out on its own. I actually have to push it on it pretty hard for it to move but I can "push" on it either in the middle or the top and it moves back and forth probably 1/8" of inch, but it's not coming out.

Where do the two bottom screws go in? Is it from the front (outside the bumper) or the rear (inside the bumper)? I remember looking at it some time ago and it wasn't immediately apparent to me. I'd like to figure something out so I can easily switch back and forth between front plate and no front plate.

They at the bottom of the plate inbetween the bumper and the plate itself. It's hard to get a screw driver in there.

The link you posted up above says it's a GM piece that's been painted. So apparently you do have an OEM GM cover.

I think the price breakdown goes something like this:

license plate cover - $40
paint job - $20
Corvette tax - $110

Yeah it is expensive but its not much more than what GM wants for just the plate itself.

Mine didnt come with one, I just got some of the wire mesh to match the other vents and used the black plastic plate holder piece with it. Cost like $25 for the material and looks pretty good. I would like to pick up a plate cover too but no way Im paying $170 for a little piece of painted plastic. Well, it does say 'corvette' on it so I guess they figure that justifies the additional $110. If the exact same part said 'hyundai' on it I bet it would be like $10. I can wait until I find one for sale in my color.
