Default 2004 Z06 Dealership Service Dept Help

I have a 2004 Z06 with about 20,000 miles (Yea, I don't drive it enough ) and the check engine light came on. Afterwards, I took it to O'Donnell Chevrolet-Buick, where I get my usual oil change and wheel work done. I get a call back saying that I need the check valves replaced, throttle body cleaned, and injectors cleaned and the total estimate came out to be $1,434.62 .

I inquired why the cost was so high and the service writer told me that the job takes about 5 hours and that the intake needs to be removed to access the check valves. At this point I'm thinking is this some insane Corvette tax at work or is the cost really legitimate? I would never have thought those would be the figures for check valves and cleanings.

In addition, the steering column lock message has appeared since last month and the gentleman at the dealrship told me it will be $1,100.00 to get that solved .

Finally, I asked him if I can just pick the car up since I wanted to take some time to consider but he said I need to pay $190.00 for the diagnostic work!

I am a frugal dental student living on student loans and I would like to fix the problem correctly and not get hustled. Any feedback or advice would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. I also asked the service writer to give me the codes. He was hesitant and asked questions such as what I wanted the codes for and what I was planning to do with them. Eventually I was able to get them out of him and they are: p0492, p0121, and p0300.

I think you're being taken for a ride. Run, Forest, run. You can check your own codes through the DIC. Checkout this website: http://www.stengel.net/diccodes.htm or this one: http://www.c5forum.com/ayc/2000dtc.php. Two of the codes they gave you don't exist.

The IPC display, the 20-character, vacuum florescent screen above the steering column that says "Corvette by Chevrolet" every time you turn on the key is a powerful device.

DIY Service Techs are going to be most interested in the LPG’s ability to show diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) for all the modules that transmit them.

The "diagnostic display" mode is entered with the following Procedure: Page 8-500

1) Turn on the ignition but don't start the engine.
2) Press the "reset" button to turn off any warning messages
3) Press and hold "options" and
4) While holding "options", press "fuel" four times within a 10-Second period.

Initially, the on-board diagnostics go into the "automatic" mode, which shows each module's DTCs in a

For each module, all DTCs will be displayed. If none are present in a module, you will see "no more codes" on the ICP display.
There are two kinds of DTCs, "Current" and "History," designated with a letter suffix, "C" or "H". A current code indicates that the malfunction is present in the system whose module is displaying data. A history code indicates a problem existed in that module sometime in the last 40 or 50 ignition cycles. When not accompanied by a current code of the same number, it is possible it's evidence of a previous problem. Now solved, that was not removed by clearing codes. More likely is that a history code indicates an intermittent malfunction.

"Intermittent" are the most challenging DTCs. An intermittent may have happened only once, may have happened more than once but is inconsistent in its appearance or may be happening on a regular basis but not at the time the IPC is displaying codes. History codes can also be caused by a current malfunction in a system that is not Operating at the time DTCs are displayed. An example is the rear window defogger, which doesn't operate until the BCM detects engine rpm. For history codes set by a system that does not operate with the key on and engine off, a special diagnostic tool called a "scan tester is necessary to properly diagnose the malfunction.

Once the IPC has displayed all 11 modules, the system goes into the manual mode, which allows selection of each module, using combinations of DIC buttons. The manual mode can also be entered at any time during the automatic sequence by pressing any button except "E/M". Once the IPC displays "manual diagnostics", you may select a particular module by pressing the options button to go forward or the "trip" button to go back. Once a system is selected and a DTC is displayed, if more than one are present; press "gages" To move forward or "fuel" to go back. To exit the diagnostic mode at any time, press E/M". If you want to erase or "clear" codes, press "reset". Clearing a code does not repair a problem. You are simply erasing the evidence of it in the module's memory.

You sir, are being hosed. Have them explain how many hours they are charging you for the "diagnostics" they performed, and why they are charging you for it. Was there a quote for the diagnostics given to you before being performed? Some states require a autherized quote for work to be performed (either signed by the customer or an autherization number given over the phone)

The service column lock was a recall, remind them of it. Then let them know that you will have to call the NTSB. (Or you an just buy the sub $100 parts from a supporting vendor or Egay and fix it yourself in about 30 mins)

Have them explain these "check valves" they are wanting to replace for $1400, then have them give you the part numbers. The only check valves under or near the intake that I can currently think of is maybe the PCV valve? But that is right next to the throttle body basically and does not require the intake to be removed. I am not aware of anything under the intake that would need to be replaced other than the oil PSI sending unit or the Knock sensors. Not much else under there.

I personally would let them charge you more than maybe 1 hour of labor (even tho autozone or such would pull the codes for free) Also tell them NOT to do ANY thing, dont erase the codes either, but more than likely they will clear the codes.

P0300- random misfire.
Could be aslew of things or could be nothing. What fuel are you running? With 20k on the clock I assume the plugs are still stock OEM's? (I would go ahead an look into replacing the spark plugs with a set of NGK iridium's, if you replace the plug wires I personally recommend a set of Firecore wires or such.)

P0492- secondary air injection pump-
Here is possibly where they are talking about check valves, but they are not under the intake but on the side of exhaust manifolds. There is a possibility that they may have failed (carbon build up causing them to stick) Or the air pump has injested water.

P0121 - Throttle Position Sensor/Switch A Circuit Range/Performance Problem
This can be a tough one. Really need a scan tool or such to see what the TPS is reading. It could be a chaffed wire, water intrusion into the connector, or a internal short/open in the sensor itself. Less likely is a bad ECU (personally I would not consider the ECU as a possiblilty.) My personal experiance is a bad sensor, but when you replace it, you need to perform a relearn procedure and make sure you get the sensor to read the proper voltage when the throttle blade is closed. (I believe it should read .04 volts but you should double check that and not trust me 110%)

Thank you very much! I will be heading to the stealership today to reclaim my car and discuss the diagnostic charge with them.

My 2002 has only 13,000 on it and I'm the original owner. Anyway, get the car back, clear all of the codes using the DIC buttons, pull the battery cable for a few minutes, and then see if the codes return.

You bring your car to the dealer for an oil change? My TB and injectors are perfectly clean, yours are probably clean as well.

Reminds me of the time the ex, took her Explorer in for routine maintance. $2500 later she showed me the bill the next day. I was shocked. Belts and hoses, which in my opinion were fine. And 150 dollars for injector cleaning. I looked up the part number on the internet. It was a bottle of stuff you pour in the tank, which sold for 12 bucks. The other 138 dollars was for labor................. Basically robbery.

Take your car to someone else. Those guys are thieves. Preying on old people and women.

Try to find a corvette shop in your area.

Sounds like possible P1415 and P1416 codes for stuck check valve. The P1416 valve is between the intake and firewall requiring intake removal to replace. Can just spray some oxygen sensor safe carburetor cleaner in the hose coming from the airbox to un-stick it and be done. You will know more when you pull your own codes. $200 for diagnostics is about 2 hours labor to read the DIC.
