Why so much friggen wheel hop!!!!
So I took my Z to the drags for the first time. The first run was 13.0, second 12.6 and third 12.5. In all 3 runs I was not able to do a proper burn out. No matter what I tried I had bad wheel hop. Low rpm, high rpm and pop the clutch. High rpm and heavy brakes. Even on every launch at around 3 k the roll out was allll wheel hopping!. I bought NT05 tires in the spring and have about 5k on them.

First thing I would check is make sure shocks are good. By checking for leaks etc. In 02 I believe they offered f55 shocks. If so, good luck on replacing them, they are ridiculously expensive. That is usually the only thing that would make wheel hop. Or if traction control was on possibly? Was there water in the water box??

Yea there was water. And the car has 25, 000km on it. I'd doubt the shocks are shot. The car has 400rwhp. Maybe I just suck! It was my very first time ever with any car at a drag strip. My first run I had forgoten to take traction off ha!. But I used "competition mode" for all other runs. My 60 foot on my 12.5 run was around 2.1. Is that ok?

Someone correct me if im wrong, but these cars don't have much wheel hop from the factory do they? I have not had this problem on my 04 - but im not dumping my clutch at 3K either though.

My 03 Z06 is at 455rwhp and the few times that I have punched it from a dead stop I haven't had issues with wheel hop. The car shimmy's side to side very little but after that it just hooks and books.

No drag racing, but some spirited driving with a fellow Z06er. Even though I have about 50 RWHP more, with the Pirelli's he could hang with me. Now no contest!

Bad tires will wheel hop when they intermittently lose and gain traction. I had wheel hop on all of my street tires, in my z06 and my ws6. On a good drag radial with a softer compound the issue was gone. When you have optimal traction you wont wheel hop. Judging by you having nittos being a glorified street tire, Im willing to bet thats your issue.

mine hopped bad with crappy bfg kdw2's, one of the worst tires I've ever had... since then I have switched to 2 different tires and added a pfadt rear brace and motor mounts and there is no more hop... the nt05 is a fairly soft street tire so I don't think those are the issue, what pressure are you running them at?... I would look for a pfadt rear brace, that seems to cure most people's issues

Is it wheel hop you're having or is it drivetrain shake? I would bet it's drivetrain shake as they all do it to varying degrees. You should try something like this:

This thread is all over the place... At full tire pressure u will get wheel hop plain and simple!! U need to air down to low 20's psi and the wheel hop should go away. And cutting 1.6 60ft on a street tire is not an easy task takes really above average driver that knows how to launch a modern Vette and incredible track prep. I've mustered a 1.72 60ft on my nitto NT05's. Again not usuall.

Agree with the above post, surprised this was the first time anyone mentioned tire pressure. OP, what was your trap speed? 2.1 isn't that bad on street tires, and with 400 to the wheels, I would figure low low 12s with that 60ft. Were your shifts crisp?

My trap speed was 117mph at the 12.5. And I was running 28-30psi on the tires. The last run I even had wheel hop on the roll out. I launched at 3000rpm and feather the throttle, then in second it hooks everytime. 1st was uselss all night.
What about doing the burnout in 2nd gear? I always do my donuts in 2nd gear and never had wheel hop.

Second gear burnout is fine. Since wheelhop is caused by the tires intermittently getting traction and spinning, your launch technique must be adjusted to the track conditions. Tire pressure is only one piece of the puzzle. The OEM tires were usually best from 24 to 26 psi and could readily produce 60's in the 1.8s with decent track prep and 60's as low as 1.7s with excellent prep. As for your Nittos, you will need to experiment but a good place to start would be 25 psi (HOT). Even using DRs, we would run around 21 psi in the C5Z Bolt-On setup. Many of us have learned a great deal from Ranger when launching these cars. Here is a link:

This will get you started. You may vary this once you get a feel for the launch. Here is a variation on the technique that worked for us.

You must remember that the track prep, ambient air temp, track, temp, density altitude, tire type, tire pressure, and most importantly driving technique will all affect your car's launch.
Good luck and keep us posted.
