Awesome awesome advice in here. To the OP, as mentioned already, it is a bigger leap in performance than you think from your G8 to a C5Z. I had a 99 CamaroSS that was Bolton and small cam and my 01Z, back when it was stock, could still take it. Nevermind 02+. I bought my 01Z at 22yo in 2007 back when it had 44kmi and bone stock down to the filter. Almost 10 years later, she now has 135k on the clock with a 418ci that made 490/486 at sea level. Although the idea of starting with so much power is great, there is something special and to be had with a car you've taken and built all along. Not to mention the respect in power difference along the way. Excited to see what you end with. Best of luck to you.

Didn't realize this thread was still kind of active...

Sadly, I sold the G8 in order to buy a truck. Definitely not as fun as the G8 or presumably a C5Z. I got a great deal on the truck, so maybe in the coming years, I'll be able to trade up to something more enjoyable.

It was such a good deal that I am the first person in my family for the past four generations to own a Ford

The G8 is missed.

No hating on Fords as I'm a Ford guy who happens to own a C5Z...twice. LOL As for this thread...we just all wasted time commenting.

Nothing was wasted! I did read all of the replies. A lot of good advice.

Who knows.. maybe someone will come up to me with a pristine Z to trade for my truck

"I currently drive a '08 G8 GT. It was my first car, and I love it, but I think I'm ready to move on. 310rwhp and 4,000 pounds just doesn't get me excited anymore."

-If that is what you NEED than get it. If its something that you want than you should think it over... going from 310whp with 4000lbs will feel something like this below

- go to 2:13

I kicked the idea of heads & cam / boost for a while. made many threads. asked many questions. at the end it came down it being like choosing to move in with your girlfriend... you better love it! because getting rid of it aint gonna be that easy.

Ouch, getting destroyed out here. Didn't know that the SS came out in 96.

I'll note instead that my car came from the factory as an auto 6 cylinder. It was then converted using an LT1 and had a 6 speed put in it.

Sorry for using the improper terminology, just trying to give a relative performance example of what I had.

Jeez

I had an '04 GTO & an '08 G8 GT both modded pretty well - the G8 had LT headers no cats, X pipe, into magnaflow axleback, vararam, DoD delete cam, etc. I wish I didn't get rid of it only to keep as a beefy muscle car DD - I would take it up to VT ski country running blizzaks @ 365whp or so got plenty of looks too lol!

As far as performance/sport cars go the G8 isn't even worth discussing in the context of a C5Z tho, as good as the G8 handles FOR WHAT IT IS (& it performs significantly well taking that into context) it is still a 4000 lb 4 door mid level sedan.

I decided to stop fussing about my sooped up modded daily drivers & got myself into the position where I could afford a REAL sports car as a hobby/weekend ride & I'm glad I did. I drive a truck the rest of the time.
