Default Which Shifter Should I Buy? MGW? Kirban? RSD? Others?

Hey Guys,

Long time since I've posted, been out enjoying the car too much. Tried to keep things stock, but I'm getting the itch to start modifying a little. I've recently realized how easy some of this stuff is and how fun it can be! Currently waiting on my replacement switch for the hazards/turn signals to fix this common problem. But now I'm looking and thinking, it shouldn't be that much work to get the console out! LOL

So, looking for everyone's input and experience with different shifters. I enjoy driving the car, fast at times... Don't spend much if any time at the drag strip or track, more of just a cruiser. Looking for a shifter that has a shorter throw front to back, the stock one is crazy long... I've read lots of the MGW, thinking that is probably the way I should go, but figured I would ask first (Haven't had the opportunity to ask others locally or try anything first hand, in Windsor, ON). Also looking at the Kirban and RSD shifter. Not sure what else I should be looking at or if there are certain things that would point me one way or another?

Appreciate all input!

Thanks,

MY-C5Z06

I have a Hurst Short Throw and it's very notchy in a good way but very stiff.
I heard the MGW is really good.

I have the MGW and really like it. It is a much firmer shift than stock, requires more effort to shif but much more precise. The c6 shifter is also a very good upgrade from the stock c5.

If my car didn't already come with a B&M shifter, I'd buy the Fidanza. Around $80 on Amazon and apparently performs just as well as other aftermarket brands:

I installed the B&M short throw in my Z and so far I love it. The majority on here rave about the MGW though and I have never tried it. It is a little spendier also.

I got a good deal on the Hurst and love it. It comes with different springs so you can tailor it to your preference.

I have an MGW race (the flat handled one), and I like it a lot. It definitely does require more effort, but I'm no Nancy so it's ok with me. I would like to try out some of the other ones. I kinda want a shifter and an axle back collection. lol

I love my B&M. Tried out the rsd, stock c6z, and hurst in other cars and didn't love any of them, though all were better than stock.

There was a screaming deal on the B&M though so I scooped it up, and couldn't be happier. I would love to try an MGW based on reviews, but I doubt I would upgrade

Appreciate the input guys. Trying to see what I can see and feel first hand. Either that or what and see what kind of deal I can find on one...

I've tried Hinson, MGW, B&M with anti venom mod (one washer) in my c5z. They were all great but i got fed up with fighting it to get in reverse with each one.
Went back to stock.
Wouldn't mind trying out a c6z shifter...

sounds like you needed an alignment on the shifter.. reverse on my car is as easy as any other gear.

Even without the antivenom mod I can put it in reverse with one finger

Agreed. Something wasn't right with your instal. A little more effort is required over stock for all gears but none are hard to get into.

Hmmm... by alignment are you referring to alignment pin? Because this was the first step of my installs. Push the pin and lock it in neutral position.

yeah.. still kind of odd. Is it reverse slightly stiffer with your stock shifter too?

Mine almost feels like like there's a small bit of resistance just before going fully to the right but it isn't any harder than any other gear.

My first shifter was an RSD, and it was notchy and noisy. The second one was a C6Z and I liked it, but it was a lot longer throw than I wanted. Ended up with a MGW, with the stock C6Z box, and handle. (****) I really like this, but as stated above, you can't be a sissy, and it still has a resistance between gears with the anti-venom mod. Reverse is no problem at all, but I lined up the shift rod to the box carefully. There's a notch on the rod that needs to be centered to work properly, but it's easy to access when your changing shifters. MGW are top quality as well.

Yes slightly stiffer with stock shifter. But going to 4th first and then reverse is smooth like butter, no effort...

Hm. Well as long as you're happy, then that's all that matters.

To be honest I wasn't even going to get a shifter. I didn't like how stock felt, but it wasn't bad enough to warrant paying out a ton of money. The only reason I bought mine was because of a great deal.

If I bought another car, I would go B&M again just because I have zero complaints on it now.

My car came with the C6 shifter installed. It was horrible. After reading many threads that favored one shifter over another, I went with the MGW.

Night and day difference between the C6 and I've driven stock C5 cars before and it's exponentially better as well.

My only complaint is that 5th and reverse are pretty close in the gear pattern so if you're not careful you can hit 5th instead of reverse during a k turn...but overall it's no more difficult to shift than stock. It's just more precise. Best mod I ever did.

Had a Kirban. Overly stiff.
Had C6z. Kinda mushy although better than C5
Got an MTI 6-shooter for free (lucky) and it's Goldie Locks good.
