Default 2002 Z06 - potential purchase questions

I have the opportunity to pick up a stock 2002 Z06 with 125k for $10,000. It’s definitely road worthy but needs some TLC - clear coat, tune up, etc. I would make it my winter project. What do you guys think? I daily drove a 2001 coupe 6spd and miss it. Does anyone run carfax’s here? If so I would appreciate it, if not no big deal. 1G1YY12S925116814. Thanks!

It's pretty high mileage, and with a new paint job alone you'll be in for $15K or so. If nothing major else is wrong you could have a very fun ride for not much loot, but be ready for some repairs I'd think.

Two words: Race Car,
Spec Corvette,
Wrap it,
Race it,

Ok that was more than two words, but I think you get where I’m going. Paint work kills a 125K daily driver if you want it to be nice, you’ll be in the hole big time when you sell it, but it sounds like a perfect track car project !

As long as you like working on cars get it. If you just like to drive like me then I'd hold out for something with half the miles. I got mine with 66k and it's been a dream. Nothing but fluids and rubber. I did the skip shift bypass and lock column but those are easy.

Pass on it altogether doesnt sound like anything is good about it;youll be working on it forever and grow to hate it trust me!

Cheap vettes are the most expensive someitmes. Hold out be patient, not all of them are in the 20s anymore. Many nice ones in the teens wiht less miles that are taken care of.

edit: A tune up....on an EFI car forget it theres more going on $$$

I would pass on it. You'll end up spending way more than you think and regret buying it.

If you have to put a lot of money like $5-10k, why not just search for a low miles with mods you want for $20k? A $10k z will rack up expenses quick.

If I start shopping around the $20k+ mark I think I may be better off looking into an LS3 C6...

If it has been regularly serviced and is in mechanically good shape, I say go for it. Just pay the fee for the Carfax. It's worth it for the $30-40 it costs. If it is still stock, that is a good sign. Corvettes seem to be quite robust mechanically.

I purchased a 2002 Z06 in June with 93,500 miles on it. Paint in okay but not the best condition. The panels behind the wheels have gotten a good sand blasting because of the sticky Goodyears. Mechanically, its in great shape. So far, I think its the best made car I have ever owned.

Oh looks like you had a 2001 c5 already. I misread og post. That for me would make a big diff for me. Looked at prices of ls3 c6, some are in the $15k range.

I wouldnt go for the highest miles for either c5 or c6 just because it happened to be the cheapest option tho. Buying a well maintaned one will pay itself back.

Either way good luck with the hunt.

mileage isn't what would turn me off, it's condition. look for a car that needs nothing. they are cheaper in the long run. fixers are account drainers

i have seen 100k c5s in excellent shape and i have also seen them beat to hell and look worse than many 200k cars with a lot of the mileage likely put on 1/4 mile at a time

find a nice old man owned driver car and or an ls3 car if you're on the fence. either one is a fun car

If the guy is willing to let a C5 Z go for $10K, it must need a lot of TLC, if he will take $10K, he will probably take $8K...it doesn't take much to rack up some major bills if you are not doing all the work your self.

A non Z C6 is not going to have the raw, race car feel that a C5z will have. And any non widebody C6 isn't going to look nearly as good as a C5Z. That last one is subjective, but that's my opinion.

Agreed. Not stock anyway. I vote pay more for better c5z, or wait and save for c6z with heads valves already addressed
