LS6 breakin period
Hey guys looking to purchase an o4 Zo6. Just wondering what the breakin period for an LS6 motor. Do you have to baby it throughout the power band to help the rings set before you can drop the hammer?

I have had a 2001, 2002 & 2003. I have hammered them before I received them and followed GM recommendations and I can't tell the difference. Maybe someone who owns them when they have 50,000 miles on them will.

Thanks for your responce. I just sold my 98 coupe today and Going to purchase a 04 ZO6-Z16 from my buddy in your area (Easily). He drive them real hard and then sells his Zo6s. I know that they are built to do what he's doing, but it different when you are about to pay 50k and it's your ride he's in. I read on the forum in the past that these motor's have had a ring problem. I was just wondering if GM got smart and built these motor's to be hammered on right off the lot, seeing that will be back to the dealership for oil consumption/smoking due to driving it like we stole it. Thanks again for you responce

Hey Mike, I have an 04. Drove it over 200 miles from the dealer to get her home. All highway, made sure RPM`s weren`t constant. Pushed her a little higher after 500 miles, but will wait untill i hit a grand, drop the oil, and bring her up a notch. Good Luck

IMHO,
I'd take it easy for the first couple of hundred miles, change the oil and filter, and then let her snap. Old school Break' in periods are things of the past. Todays tolerances are much tighter. :yesnod:
Just look at Nascar and F1.

Re: LS6 breakin period (CPT Z06)
What? Old school was breaking in the cam, no need for that with rollers, but the rings still need to be set, old school or not. It's the tight tolerances of the rings that need the breakin.
Getting the vehicle up to operating temp before pounding is more important.

Mike, the 2001 Z06 had some oil consumption problems. 2002 and up are fixed. If the guy you are getting the car from is named Bill I think you are in good hands. He knows what he is doing and running hard as long as they are warmed up properly as he does creates no problems. Good luck.
