Default Z06 or Z51 MN6 Coupe?

Guys I'm selling my 01 coupe and plan on replacing it with an 04 Z06. First mods planned are Kooks headers, vortech intake and corsa indy exhaust. Would you recommend getting a coupe and using the extra cash between the coupe and Z06 for mods on the coupe or just get the Z06 outright?

depends on what you are looking for in a vette.

if you want performance out of the box-get the Z06

if you like to take the top off-get the coupe.

good luck on your choice!

That signature pic looks like TWS. If you're going to be tracking the car, go ahead and get the Z06. If you really want the removeable top and the sports seats, etc. get the MN6 Z51 Coupe and put in an air intake, long-tube headers, cat-back exhaust, and 4.10 gears. Get some good wheels/tires and you'll be at 99% of the performance of the Z06 with the extra Coupe goodies for probably a similar price as a stock Z06.

When I bought my '01 Coupe, the '01 Z06 was an unknown quantity and I wanted the extra goodies the '01 coupe had (HUD, sport seats, targa top, blah). But I'm a roadracing freak now and while my car is really awesome on the track, I wonder what a Z06 with all my mods would feel like on the track. I bet it would feel quite nice.

Don't forget, you'd have to upgrade the suspension & wheels & rubber as well.

I don't think the C6/Z51 will be the same in terms of performance as the Z06. While the power is nearly there, it lacks the extra rubber and the transmission gearing .... not to mention, if you plan on running race rubber, good luck. Last I checked, it's kinda hard to find race tires in 19's.

Back on topic ... it depends on what you really plan on doing with the car. If ultimate performance is the goal, go with the '99-'00 hardtop and dump a bunch of cash into the performance mods. If you absolutely had to, you could even swap in an LS6 motor and the MN12 tranny .... for probably cheaper than outright buying a used Z06. But, if you just want the complete package without tinkering with anything, then the Z06 is a better choice.

i was in your position once.. and i ended up with a Z... glad i did...

more powerfull... better gearing... better handling... worst seats.. no removable top... but the z is the best corvette avalible.. get it while you can..

It also depends on what options you want with the car. Remember the Z06 doesn't have the Twilight Sentinal, Telescoping Steering Wheel, Power Passenger Seat, Sport Seats or Low Tire Pressure Warning System.

I went with the Z06 for its power. Then I added the LTPWS and would like to add sport seats. The LTPWS is an inexpensive easy install. The sport seats cost a bit more. If I had the money and ability, I would love to get the telescoping steering wheel.

Not to hijack the thread, but I'm going to bet that a Z51 six-speed C6 Coupe with some good wheels/tires is going to be a more dominant roadracing/autocross car than the current Z06.

How do you figure?

Although the C6 has about the same peak horsepower, the Z06 is lighter (mine came in at 3018), has better brake cooling (so you can go more than one or two turns without fading), a longer wheelbase (which is essential to high speed stability), better suspension set up (for road racing), the torque peak in the current Z06 is higher at 4800rpm vs. 4400rpm in the C6 so you're in your power band more often when going through the gears, which brings up the closer ratio transmission.

It's true you could put some stuff on a regular Corvette, or most any sports car for that matter, to get it in the same range of performance, but then you could also spend that same money to upgrade the Z06 also. But the Z06 as it comes doesn't need anything extra really to go racing with.

Also, no one knows for sure what the new Corvette will cost anyways. It might actually be more money.

So what makes you think it will be better at road racing? I might give you autocross as the events currently seem to be held in parking lots so there are plenty of 10mph 90-degree turns, in which a short wheelbase is definitely superior, but out on a true road course with high speed turns and heavy braking I think the current Z06 will outperform the newer C6 coupe.

Of course, the C6 Z06 model will probably be better...but it will still have the shorter wheelbase.

How?
The Z06 is all about rigidity. The coupe has the roof missing and a huge hole in the back (hatch) not to mention it is lighter. A lighter car all other things equal will accelerate, handle, and brake better.

Maybe its just me, but I have no need for any of these options (except maybe the sport seats).

Possibly. But you'd be making modifications to the C6/Z51 as is. That wouldn't be apples-to-apples. In terms of auto-x SS class, I think the Z06 will still be the dominant car until A) the new Z06 comes out AND B) DOT-R tires start coming out in 19" sizes. Which, at that point, brings Vipers back into the mix.

The C6 is shorter and does have a stiffer chassis. But, in a stock-for-stock comparison, I think the Z06 will still be better. Or better put, I ain't scared of it .... yet? ;)

I thought the same way at first. But now I realize how nice it is to see my tire pressure while driving, allowing me to prevent wheel damage. If I had the telescoping steering wheel I could make a better seating adjustment. I can't get close enough without crunching up my legs.

Good points. Though, the first thing I would do is throw SCCA autocross out the window, bolt on some mean, wide 17 inch front and rear wheels, and go out and roadrace the heck out of a C6 Z51 Coupe.

Also, I think the general consensus is that GM is underrating the LS2 by a fair bit, so I think straight-line acceleration is going to be very, very close if not favoring the C6 Z51 six-speed. Of course, at that point, it's down to driver anyway

even if they were underated.. the MN12 will favor the z06 again.. plus lets not forget that GM annouced that the C6Z51 6 speed was one second slower than a Z06 that was giving a C5Z51 4 seconds... so its a big jump in terms of a C5Z51 but not enough to beat the Z :jester

or maybe they are just saying this so that we dont get rid of our Z's before they get rid of the overstocked ones :skep:

Howdy!

Honestly, why sell your current Coupe to replace it with another Coupe? Looks like it's already setup pretty good. Why not spend a few more dollars on the existing ride, go ahead and do some headers, maybe even a moderate cam and a LS6 intake (you can find all these parts for great deals used).

If you're going to the effort/cost to "trade up" you might as well get into something you havent' had before, that's a difference experience -> the Z06
