Default Z51 tire wear

I just check the tread depth and with 4,300 miles the rear tires are at 8/32". New tread depth is 9/32" so this isn't bad. Should be good for 25,000 miles before replacing. I'm not very hard on tires as my 2003 C5 rear tires had 4/32" left when I traded the car at 43,000 miles. Your mileage may be different.

The Tire Rack web site shows the regular EMT tires come with 10/32" front and 11/32" rear while the Z51 tire tread depth is 9/32" both front and rear. The combination of less tread depth when new, faster tire wear and a more expensive tire means having a bigger tire budget in the future.

Just cannot smoke the rears on Z-51. OR it will come with a price on the future tire budget.

I think what I am saying is the Z51 tires will be needing replacing almost twice as soon as the standard tires. For me, 25,000 miles as compared to 48,000 for the regular EMT. Someone who got only 20,000 miles from the standard EMT tires might only get 10,000 from the Z51 tires. It all depends on your driving habits.

Stupid question but what tool do you use to measure the tread depth.... I dont have calipers readily available at home - we doing the coin measurement or is there a more accurate measurement?

Snap-on makes a neat inexpensive little tread gauge that is quite accurate. Each number has a line under it and the tread depth is the lowest number with the line showing.

My '02 Z06 was on pace to get about 25K from the F1 SC (non-EMT, of course). I'd expect that to be about the high end for these tires.
