Default Power Steering fluid?

Is the power steering fluid special? Most fluid I see is ATF but can't find a cross reference saying the GM fluid is ATF.

Anyone know for certain?

Check your owners manual. Mine for a 2005 says use GM Power Steering Fluid on page 6-11.

Yea, I know. That is why I am asking. Usually PS units run on ATF. I would rather use my ATF than GM's more expensive PS fluid if I can.

Thanks

There was a discussion about that on the C5 Forum once, what I remember was "don't do it." Apparently there IS a difference between the two fluids, at least for GM.

Back in the 60's, in GM cars you could use ATF "Type A" in the power steering. Since Dexron ATF, this is no longer the case. You should use the recommented GM Power Steering Fluid, GM Part No. U.S. 89021184, or equivalent.
