I plugged factory xm tuner back in and the only way I could get a signal was to hook up BOTH the black and yellow wires. I tried all possible configs (just yellow, just black, swapped ports, etc)

Is it possible that my xm antenna needs both wires?? it sounds so, but then I wonder do the others on here that were successful have a diff xm antenna?? Maybe it has to do with the way they installed the relacement xm antenna last year?? Interestins mystery,

Incidentally, make sure that you dont swap the power connector while the car is on (i know its common sense, but i did and i bloew the radio fuse. Ended up being a good lesson cause i know where the fuse panel is (under the rug by passngers feet)

any ideas on the antenna mystery??

Well, I don't know if I'm the guy you were talking about but that is exactly what I did. I have an '05 couple, 1SB equipped, so all I had to do was to install the XM module in the area above the LR wheel (the wiring is already present), install an antenna, have my dealer reprogram the BCM to reflect that it has the new system, and activate the service. Works like a charm.

The one difference is that I bought the XM module from a guy who was converting his '06 vert from XM to Sirius (replaced the entire HU as this kit was not available in January). If someone needs a part number, sorry I can't help.

While trying to convert to sirius yesterday, i noticed that the radio's "XM" button will disappear when the XM tuner is removed. I then plugged in the SIRIUS tuner, but still, no XM button. I had to plug the xm unit back in in order to see the XM button, so I dont think that you can just plug the converter in without having the sirius unit. also, someone just mentioned something about having to reprogram something to accept XM. so, i think it will work, but you need to do either one or both of the prevoius options. There is no "band" button on these Head Units

But I have no XM option on the screen. Are you saying if I plug the sirius tuner in it will then say XM thinking it is an XM tuner?

Sounds like you need to:
1. Borrow an XM tuner to plug in
2. Reprogram the BCM to reflect that it has the new system
3. Swap out the XM tuner for the SIRIUS

Where do you live? If I can ever get this SIRIUS box to work, I may able to lend you the XM tuner....

Here is the official compatibility list. What makes the SIR-GM1 compatibile is the type of bus system that the vehicle has- It is necessary to have a Class-2 bus system (most 2003 ~2006) . The C6 and Hummer H2/H3 will be Class-2 through 2007.

review the links to see the details adn full compatibility list

But will the head unit recognize it without any programming of anything? If so, all is well....thanks.

Interesting observation about having the XM button disappear after disconnecting the unit. I didn't see this because I disconnected XM and reconnected Sirius in a matter of 10 seconds with no ignition cycles. I will try to reproduce this and confirm. Sounds like if you do this:

1) Shutdown car
2) Remove XM unit
3) Start up car and see XM button gone
4) Shutdown car
5) Connect Sirius SIR-GM1
6) Restart car - theoretically should see no XM button?

If this is the case, it sounds like you would want to keep your XM unit around for an awakening after a battery failure or disconnect if required.

Yes, you are correct - the XM buttom will disappear after XM tuner removed and will not come back if you install SIR-GM1. You HAVE TO install the XM tuner. Otherwise, do it all with car off and you are good to go.

I installed the SIR-GM1 unit last week on my 06 and used the XM antenna - it has worked perfect. As a matter of fact it is louder than the XM was. I don't know what would affect it to make that happen i just know that I can hear it now with the top off (intentionally) going down the freeway.

The higher volume would be from a higher audio output level on the sat receiver, nothing to do with the antenna.

What differances in reception any are you noticing between XM and Sirius?

Does Sirius drop out more or less often then XM as you drive around.

It is louder by about a third. I was disappointed with the output of the XM - I couldn't hear it when the top was off going down the freeway. With the Sirius I can hear ir just fine now and I still have some volume left.

My XM dropped out momentarily going under a large interchange type of a bridge and the Sirius does that too but other than that it works great and best of all it has a much better choice of music than XM did - for me at least YMMV.

I installed the SIR-GM1 two weeks ago. All I did was unplug the XM and plug the SIR-GM1 in using the adapter. Since I removed the XM antenna, I ran the Sirius antenna from the unit along the drivers side under the plastic trim along the door sill (under the trim) and up through the top corner of the windshield.

The thin black wire tucked easily under the trim so no wires are seen. I installed the Sirius antenna in the corner using velcro with the antenna facing up against the glass (magnet side down).

I have had better reception than my XM, no drop outs where I used to lose XM and excellent sound quality. I also noticed, as someone esle mentioned, the sound is louder.

I did the same install on another GM car with XM already installed. In that car, I used the existing XM antenna. The XM antenna had two wires connected to a blue plug (I believe one is for XM and one is to use the standard antenna for access to repeaters if the satellite cannot be found). Removing the white clips allowed the wires to slip out. I then connected the Cream colored wire directly to the Sirius unit and no problems, perfect reception.

Hope this helps.

Ok, here's an update. I have had the Sirius and XM unit disconnected from my car for days. I have started the car and driven to places at least 20 times without any satelitte radio. The XM icons have been missing from my NAV 2006 head unit for days. I simply reconnected the Sirius unit today and the icons re-appeared. I did not have to reconnect the XM unit at all to get the XM icons back.

I also got the FAKRA to angled SMB adapter from the guy who is making them. Its a very clean job and works great and feels solid on the FAKRA connector and the SMB connector.
