AutoWeek says, “C6 Out in 2004 as a 2005 model"

Re: AutoWeek says, “C6 Out in 2004 as a 2005 model" (BobG)
I have a different viewpoint than you on the numbers part. Ever hear of the first generation of Camaros? the 67-69's? Would you consider those to be "classics"? Well many people do, and they made over 200,000 of those in ONE year...:) Those sell for about 8-10 x's their original sticker price in excellent condition.

Re: AutoWeek says, “C6 Out in 2004 as a 2005 model" (70L46)
Thanks 70L46 for the info on the C5, If I remember correctly the exact year was 93 (the 40th anniversery), I don't need a history lesson I just think GM having actually been working on this car since 99 where as for the C5 they didn't start on it until 93 has a chance to be finished for 2004. Car company's today can design cars from scratch and have them in the showroom now in almost 2 years, I know if we are just looking at a re-skin it won't be past a 2004 model.

Re: AutoWeek says, “C6 Out in 2004 as a 2005 model" (2004vette)
I think they will still have it out by 2004. If we look back to when the C5 came out it was suppose to be a 98, it came out in 97. There going to have this car by then, they been working on it since 99. Everything should be done except for a re-skin. That's my opinion anyway.

Twenty years and the C4
...it will take 20 to 30 years for previous models to become "classics" and those will be limited to original low mileage examples...
The other issue is restoration. C2s and early C3s are very simple cars, with no "electronics" to speak of. It's my understanding that few C4s are receiving substantial restorations. GM is discontinuing parts, especially for early models, and the repro market hasn't taken much interest to date.

Can you imagine trying to "restore" a C5 with all the electronics?

Oh it's true, it's damn true.
I graduate in May of '03... hopefully will get a great job and THEN I will go get a C6 (of course, it has to have ATLEAST 400HP, 500HP would better )

By the time restoration efforts begin the C5's electronics will be quaint. Baroque, but not impenetrable. They'll probably need less work than 30-year-old cars do today.

i am currently a GM tech student
i have heard these new "thingys" coming out within the next ten years:
48 (or 42 cant remember) volt electrical system
no more keys......THUMBPRINTS!!!
alternator and starter become one
i even heard there may be a way to get rid of an onboard battery
electronic valves operated by PCM and solenoids instead of cams and lifters
IMAGINE trying to restore, per say a C7 corvette!!!!!!
the C5 will be no prob, compared to that! :yesnod:

Re: Twenty years and the C4 (Jinx)
i think one thing that will drive the C6 out faster than the 5 ever came is the total sales volume of what the C5 is doing. i personally own a 1990 c4 & have looked at the C4 sales figures..they aren't anything too special in the 90's the later they go the worse. GM sold more Z06's in 1yr than they ever did in 5yrs of a ZR1. cash makes cars and more cash makes better cars. if anyone gets bored with there C5 fly over to the UK & rent a boat :D TVR's 6cyl tuscan is i ride that would make all the neighbors jealous & at the price of a viper. i'm not sure on this but i bet it would spank a viper in most every performance aspect. 390hp & 2400lbs VS 450hp & 3300lbs..is a thought if you just get antsy for change

The C6, as a 2005 sounds good to me. We will just have to wait to see what it will be. :chevy

Re: AutoWeek says, “C6 Out in 2004 as a 2005 model" (myruby2)
I'd have to disagree with this. I believe that the C5 will be a classic. It wont go up in value for a while, true, but it is this generation's Vette to have. The C2's aren't more valuable and popular because of performance. A 69 big block will kill a 63 all day but the 63 is worth 10K more (both in good shape). Its because of the nostalgia associated with that body style. Everybody I know likes C5's. Even people who hate domestics give props to the C5. It's America's most respected car and the Corvette was dying off before it was released. I own a C4 and will readily admit that the C5 looks 110% better and performs better than that. When the C6 comes out and looks like hell, it won't matter that it's got 40 more horsepower or whatever. It'll be the hot car, sure, but the C5 will be the one that collectors 40 years from now will want. Its easy to take them for granted now when you see 5 a day, but they're damn fine cars and when they arent all over the place they will stand out and be in high demand.
