Default New car, weird burning plastic smell??

My wife got in our new car and said it smelled like burnt plastic, even kind of toxic smelling. I have a very limited sense of smell, so I cannot decifer what she is smelling. Any thoughts?

Usually it will smell after you run it a bit for the first 500-1000 miles but not like burnt plastic. Maybe it was the "new car smell". They're all a little different ,at least to me.

They are pretty stinky when new. everyone desribes the smell differently, but it is probably the normal new Corvette smell she is smelling. It is very strong for a little while. Women usually smell stuff more keenly than us guys I think too.

Inside my car still has the new car smell even at 6mo old.

Outside the smell you're describing went away after 2mo.

I think it smells exactly like burning plastic. Mine has 1300 miles on it and the smell is starting to dissapate.....but, it was very strong when I first got the car home.

I am so glad to hear someone else mentioning this.

I've had my C6 since March and when I leave my car in the garage over night with the top out and windows down, usually by the next morning the entire garage has this weird burnt plastic, new car, fresh leather smell. I've grown to like it...

Glad I am not the only one. Well, I woke up this morning and I'm still alive, so hopefully it isn't toxic. My wife has the keenist sense of smell of anyone I know, so hopefully it goes away quickly. Going to swap the OE wheels for my Z06's. Anyone know how to download photo's?

It's mosty likely a coating on the brake pads that burns off over the first 1000 miles or so. I test drove an 07 right off the truck the other day and the salesman told me up front that we'd probably get a burning smell until the brake pads were used for a while. Nothing to worry about, I'm sure.

All new cars' engines smell the first few hundred miles or so. The chemicals, gaskets, seals, adhesives, etc. are all getting heated up for extended periods for the first time. You are smelling the burning off of the excess and the smell of the stuff getting settled in. It will go away.
