Re: GM will stop tours at BG NOV 1st (Vette80)
Dang it! Now I'm really mad. The world is going to hell in a handbasket. I was looking forward to going someday. I think by over-reacting we are playing right into what the terrorists were hoping for. They have changed the face of America with these acts and we shouldn't let that affect the quality of our life or the choices we have. They should simply not allow any big bags to be carried on the tour. Are they worried a tourist would go beserk in the plant with a screwdriver and start scratching cars? Come on! This sucks.

Just got the word through NCM net. I agree that this is playing into the hands of the terrorists. Fortunately, I have been to the plant and taken the tour. However I had planned on going again and hoped it would be during a NCM delivery.

I agree that it sucks, but I doubt that it's due to terrorist concerns. My bet is that there will start to be C6 prototypes and components around the plant that they want to keep out of the public eye. :chevy

They just listed security reasons. They didn't say which ones. They may be doing it so they can run C6's around there without having to worry about anyone seeing them.

Just order a new Vette with a Museum delivery. You'll still get a tour I bet:)

Cadillac XLR test build
In another thread on corvetteforum, eight XLRs are being built and un-built at Bowling Green to provide feedback on the assembly process.
I imagine there will be enough XLR stuff going on in the coming months that tours would be stopped until the XLR is officially in the public eye.

Re: Cadillac XLR test build (Jinx)
When I heard that the tours were going to be canceled starting Nov 1 I made an emergency trip to BG for the tour.
While I was there I saw the assembly line for the XLR still under construction. It is way too far from finished to be producing anything by Nov 1. So that does not make sense unless they need XLRs on the line to assemble the equipment. There was nothing but some ground-work completed. I did not see a single piece of equipment installed above ground level. I did see an XLR (well part of one). It was under a cover that was pulled back to expose the front of the car and the hood was open. It was obvious that they did not want to expose it to the public. The XLR may be the reason for the shut down but there is plenty of room in that place to hide a few production proto-types and tourists are only in the plant a few hours out of the day.
I spoke to Adam while I was at the NCM. He said he had lunch with the Plant Manager and he told Adam that it was the terrorist threat that lead to the end of tours. His decision was made after he received a few complaints from plant employees about the risk of having so many people allowed into the plant with all the terrorist activity going on. He also told Adam he would reconsider his decision to shut down the tours after the first of the years once things have settled down and they have had time to evaluate security measures. Adam said that he is pushing for them to at least allow tours for those taking museum deliveries.
When I was there they were not allowing you to carry anything on the tour. Any bags or purses had to be checked at the security counter at the entrance.

Re: GM will stop tours at BG NOV 1st (Tom73)
I agree that the security is for the C6. If they were doing it for security from terrorists then they would shut down now, not several weeks in the future. They just don't want anyone to see any early production C6 parts/cars.

I think it is possible that this explanation is a cover for something else. It may be an excuse to get rid to the cost of the tour operation in a way that peple are will to except without criticism.
I hope they do re-open the tours: it was worth the trip.

I'm sure they will return to a normal tour schedule. I know we all would love to see our favorite cars being produced, but we need to think about the safety of the workers.
No skilled workers = No Vettes... or anything else too!
