The pipe on top is the exit pipe. The curved pipe is the entry pipe. So, putting a cap or dump at the end of that straight pipe won't provide a straight through exit for the exhaust gas (a la Warlock mufflers). I have a set of factory mufflers sitting around and with this cutout pic, I may play around with installing a "tap" to the entry pipe to provide an exit before the gases reach the curved pipe.

The problem is, there is little clearance between the top of the muffler and the rear bumper (ie above the dual exit tips) where the ideal spot for a cutout would be.

Isn't the hanger what we see just above the pipe on the left? If so, that would make the curved pipe the exit.

If anyone in the Dallas area has a stock muffler to donate to the cause I'll see what I can come up with.

I would have to agree with you. That is without a doubt the hangar so that would confirm that the curved pipe is the exit based on the way the system mounts to the car.

Photo taken from inlet side (same as upper right in cutaway) shows the embossed stiffener (upper left in cutaway). Obviously an impossibility from the outlet end.

The bright flecks are metal particles from sawing off the inlet pipe.

I installed Z06 mufflers and chose to keep the 2 1/2" pipe.

Maybe a pic of the inside of a Flowmaster or other muffler would help us come up with some ideas....it looks to me like the inside ends of both pipes are just open and so its not immediately obvious how to make this muffler a little louder...or deeper or whatever...

Here is one of my loose factory mufflers. The hanger in that cutaway pic doesn't look like its in the right spot. Maybe its just the angle.

That actually makes tapping the inlet easier to put in a straight through cutout...except for the clearance problem I mentioned earlier

Just punch a hole in that thing with a screw driver, it will sound better immediately.

Probably no drone either.

When I take a flashlight and look down the tailpipe on the car, I can see what I assume is the curve in the pipe inside the muffler. I'm talking about the curve that is just to the right of the letter "k" in the word "stock."
I think it might be possible to get a long drill bit and drill a hole in the curved pipe to the right of the letter "k". This could be done without taking the muffler off the car. It would just involve sticking the drill bit down the tail pipe and drilling away.
This would hopefully have the effect of making the stock muffler sound just like a new $1,500 exhaust - not too loud, not too soft and no drone. On the other hand, it might ruin the muffler entirely.

You'll need one heckuva long drill bit - and unless its pretty big around, you may want to put a couple of holes in it.

My idea is to have a way to open it straight thru or close it back through the packed chamber. I am looking to have a way to run it open for track and close it back for street. I have seen the mods for installing e-cutouts right by the tranny - and I have a whole separate factory exhaust to cut up to do that - but this muffler butchering is worth exploring first.

No, since there is a hanger to the left, I believe that the pipe on the top is the entrance pipe.

So if the top pipe is the inlet and it leads straight into the rear chamber, can't we just cut a 2.5" hole in the rear chamber. It's not a straight shot, you would still get an exit loss into the rear chamber and an entrance loss into the new outlet. That worries me since other than probably being louder I doubt if it would be worth any power.

Good discussion....my thinking is that whatever we do, it will only be good for sound, I wouldn't expect any increase in power....but that's all I want is 10- 20% more sound...

I have a long drill bit and am going to see if it goes down the pipe....

When I had an MX5, there was lots of this kinda talk, on their forums, about punching/drilling holes and NONE of it worked.

If one had the measurement of each dividing panel within the muffler maybe a hole could be drilled in the bottom and the fiberglas removed. The hole could then be plugged. If there was to much drone/noise ect. one could add the fiberglas back.

Can someone provide these measurements? Hell I'll try it.
