Default Stock muffler mod...

Has anybody taken a long chisel and stuck it up the tailpipe and punched thru a baffle? (Dont get gross here Knooger).
Just curious if a simple little mod like that could improve the stock exhaust note?
I'm damn tempted.

Has anybody modified the stock muffler?

IMHO...the cheapest exhaust mod is to replace the stock cans with MagnaFlow 14335s (or 14336s). About $87/ea + ~$150 for install. 200% better sound for less than $350.

What about tips? Does the $200 cover the weld for the tip replacement. I thought the better way to go was the Flowmaster 17427 for $375 + install.

I went cheap and had them reuse my stock tips. IMHO...the MagnaFlows are a better option since the Flowmasters are not stainless.

Default Followup to modifying stock muffler

I'm a new owner, and I've had the same thought about the stock muffler. I can afford a new system, but it gravels me to throw away prefectly good mufflers and pipes. Has anyone figured out how to modify the existing ones to get a better sound? It's done alot on motorcycles.

Here's what the inside of the stock muffler looks like. This will give you a target to aim for.

The current exhaust travels along the curved pipe into the chamber where you see the fiberglass packing and exits in to the chamber via the perforated holes. It then is dampened by the packing and exits out the perforated tail pipe. The best way to gain a little sound if you could access the chamber would be to remove a small quantity of the packing material.

An easy and FREE way to gain some exhaust note. Go into the fuse panel under the passenger side floor. Pull out the fuse for the exhaust, and the baffles will stay open.

Most excellent picture! I think, looking into the back end of mine, that the flow is actually out the curved pipe. I don't see why I couldn't drill a small exploratory hole into the glass mat area and try to remove some material. Small enough to be plugged if it works. From the pic the center section appears to be the only area of sound transfer within the muffler. Maybe the rest is for resonation, (is that a word?) but I bet it's only for housing the pipe bend. I'll give it a try.

My friends at Corsa Performance had done it as a side by side with their Corsa Extreme.

If you look closely at the photo you can also see that the front and back chambers are used for resonance as well. Just under the "k" on the word stock you can see a round opening that goes in to the front chamber and you can see a small amount of the glass packing going in to the hole. Just under the perforated pipe at the top you can see the bezel of a round opening that goes in to the back chamber. The front chamber also is fed with overpressure from the front perforation on the top pipe as well. I think that it is pretty fascinating really to look at the cross section.

I think your idea has merit. The center section accomplishes most of the sound reduction with the glass pack. I think that an exploratory surgery of sorts could yield some improvement. Bear in mind however that these are strands and they appear to be fairly nested. Pull too long and too hard and you will displace a large amount of packing in a short period of time. It could end up with more than you bargained for. Good luck with the experiment and do post your results for us if you wouldn't mind.

I don't think they are talking about the NPP.

Of course you do realize that only the 2008 cars WITH the NPP optional exhaust have this as an option, right? The rest of us don't have a fuse to pull and if we did, it wouldn't do anything as we don't have the butterfly valves to change state.

My 07 C6 has a 10 amp fuse at the bottom right of the passenger footwell that says exh.
I don't think it does anything though.
I think they use the same fuse boxes on the Z06 ,which would use the fuse.
One less thing to keep track of at the plant.
