I also installed mine without taking off and the latch. Only been for one ride so far but not a sound.

Thanks for a great, cheap fix!

I just took my top off to apply the silicone dialectric grease. Looking at the rollers, they were deformed and have excessive axial play. I'll be making a trip to Lowes.

You're right on the money witht he cause of the noise. I have been emailing back & forth with the factory & that's what they think it is. They sent me a pair of handles with the roller disabled which I have to put on. They will have replacement parts some time in April.

Can the clips damage the roller peg? If they don't work, how hard are they to get off?

I don't think the clips will damage the roller pin/peg - usually the pins are fairly hard steel. The clips are just hard enough to snap on, but can be easily distorted, so they are not hardened that much.

As far as getting them off, I haven't tried, but a sharp awl should be able to get between the roller and clip and pop the clip off.

I would suggest that there would be no reason to remove them. If they don't cure your particular rattle at least you don't have to deal with this roller ticking as the car flexes somewhere down the road. They aren't going to do any harm.

I had the hard top rattle over sharp bumps that was cured with the early TSB to replace the front grommets. Then after 10,000 miles this ticking sound started. First it sounding like the dash but others figured it was the rollers. Whatever is going on with that roller adding these e-clips tightens up the system to stop the noise.

Don't remove the latch; it takes just a minute to force the clips in (see pictoral photo).

As the other guy asked- is this issue limited to the transparent top only? I have the painted top - and it just started making noise today.

Thanks for taking this and finding an alternate solution. When I was talking to the engineer in Michigan, their idea to stop the rattle was to jam a staple or spade connector into the roller area to stop the roller from moving on the pin. This in effect also increases the resistance when trying to latch or unlatch the top. Your take on this still seems to let the roller move, but keeps it from moving laterally on the pin. Correct?

Correct - take up the end play so the roller cannot slide on the pin, which is what I believe is the source of the popping noise. But with the clip, the roller can still rotate and let the latch mechanism do its job smoothly.

Applies to the solid painted top also - latches are the same.

Default rear pins?

What is the best fix for the rear pins making noise? Someone mentioned teflon tape. Would Dielectric grease work also?

I read a thread where it was suggested to put shrink tubing on the rear pins, and I did that, mostly to PREVENT the possibility of noise, even though I didn't have any.

I left it on, and I do not have noise from the rear pins....

Way cool solution, mine started popping right out of the start gate when I took delivery 4 days ago, thought it might go away, but nay on that. Found this thread, took the top off to install the clips and it was like a super engineeered fix...Thanks a bunch, it took only 15 minutes to do the whole thing, not counting the trip to Lowes..........

GM could also fix this problem by using the same latching mechanism used on the convertible top, which has a center handle that you turn to engage the latching points. Another plus, is that using that type of latch, they would have an easy way to let you know that the top isn't latched. Add a couple of micro switches in holes where the rear of the top goes in, and you use the same safety interlock currently used on the vert.

This would mean the end of the Flying Roof Club because no new members could be inducted.

I can just see some 'bean counter' at Lowe's headquarters...... he's going nuts trying to figure out why just ONE size of the e-clip is selling out!
