OK, well, I tried it and it worked for me. During our experiment, there was no fob in the car.
I must say that I'm really disappointed by some of the replies in this thread. Which one of you has tried it and found it doesn't work?
Seriously, some of you are pretty mean spirited. How about saying, "no, I don't believe that", or "I heard that once and heard it doesn't work". Do you routinely go around and hear something you disagree with from someone you don't know and call them an idiot?
Either it's the 'internet effect' or you're just really not nice people. I'm also surprised by how many of you jump on the 'idiot' bandwagon. How empowered you must feel by the internet bully.

I heard from a friend of mine that if a ufo was overhead while you were talking on your cell phone and you hit the panic button on the fob that your car would melt.
Is there any truth to this?

did you happen to have the remote in your pocket??? leave both remotes at home, drive 1/4 mile away from the house, shut the car off, get out of the car, close the door and call the house.......
theres no way it works via cell phone!!!!

I don't think it will work either. However, the door will unlock if you push the button to unlock it within its range. So something "can" happen with out having the fob close to the door.

true story...........(and this is how I know about the FOB thing)
last yr, my cat swallowed my remote and I forgot where I placed fob #2, and I had to go to work, so took my pussycat outside, the doors unlocked, I thru the cat in the trunk and went to work..... when I got to work, I didnt want to leave the cat in the car, it would die in the heat.....okok, I didnt want my vette stolen, so I stuffed the cat in my briefcase and went into the office.......later on after 5pm, I took the cat into the mens bathroom and well......."searched" for the fob in the cat.....it was the tightest..........ummm kittycat!!........10 minutes later, I pulled out the remote.....the cat was pizzed, jumped out of my hands, scratched up my face and ran away.....I washed my right hand and went home.

Safety Car
If you have a phone who in their right mind would be stupid enough to call their wife and actually admit they locked themselves out when onstar is only a call away?
Geeze, I'm from Canada and even I'm not that dumb. I'd rather break a window first...
