Default Nav screen lighting problem

My nav screen, just yesterday, started to stay bright (daytime mode), regardless of the headlights being on, the wipers being on, or it being dark outside. No amount of manipulation seems to correct the problem. Am I missing something or could it be that a gremlin has popped up? Any suggestions, short of selling the car, will be gratefully appreciated...

You or something may have changed the setting for Screen Adjust.

Screen Adjust
To adjust the contrast or brightness of the screen, touch SCREEN ADJUST at the bottom of the main
audio screen.
The following screen options may be adjusted from this menu:
(Contrast)
Touch the plus (+) or minus (-) to adjust the contrast. You will see the screen change. Touch
OK to confirm the change.
[sung ](Brightness)
Touch the plus (+) or minus (-) to adjust the brightness. Touch OK to confirm the change.
AUTO
This setting automatically adjusts the contrast and brightness of the screen based on outside
lighting conditions.

DAY
This setting leaves the screen in day mode. Day mode is best suited for daylight conditions.
NIGHT
This setting leaves the screen in night mode. Night mode is best suited for nighttime
conditions.
SCREEN OFF
Touch SCREEN OFF to turn off the screen. Press the NAV, SRCE, or / (audio adjust) hard key
to turn the screen back on.
OK
Press OK to save your choices and exit this menu.

You want it in the AUTO mode.

Hey John, in the midst of a drunken, or drug induced, stupor, I may have been punching buttons just for the heck of it (or, I may just be an idiot). In any case, the "DAY" mode had been selected. THANKS for your suggestion - it fixed the problem.
