Navigation system questions
I'm considering a C6 and I really like the navigation system in my acura, and I'm wondering how chevy did in this dept.
A) Can I mess with it while driving? Lexus feels that if a driver were to mess with the navi while driving he would crash and burn, so most functionality is available only when the car is parked. Is that how the
C6's navi works?
B) Is it a DVD based system? How much do updated DVD's cost?
C) I see there are two slots behind the screen, CD and DVD. I imagine the CD slot is for playing music CDs, but what's the DVD slot for? Is this where you put the map DVDs? Can I play movies in there? If so, can I play movies while the car is driving?

1. No you cant enter while driving, you can do pre entered or previous destinations while moving
2. You cant watch movies in the dvd that is for the map discs
3. You should get a couple of years of free updates un less they discontinued it, other than that I believe they are almost $200
Overall I like the system but thats a big debate on here, you will get as many different answers as you can start threads.

I have a 2007 and my screen is showing funny lines on the right hand side. Pissing me off but don't want the dealer to touch it. I've lost faith in all shops now.

I have NAV and it does exactly what I need to it and I have no complaints. One nice feature of the C6 NAV is it feeds information to the HUD so you don't have to look down at the screen.

- No, you can't start from scratch to enter a destination while driving. You can enter and save over 100 destinations while stopped and then select any of those while driving. That should be enough for any salesman or vacation. You can change the type of routing while moving. You can get an automatic rerouting just by not going where it tells you to go.
- Yes, the maps are on DVD. I believe they are about $200 unless you got an 06 or 07 in which case you get 2 free updates. But you don't really need the updates. Most roads don't change that often and it will always get you there though it might take a little longer if you have an out of date map. And we won't mention the threads here about burning your own.
- The CD slot is for CDs and MP3 discs. The DVD slot is for the map DVD.
BTW, I wouldn't have a Corvette without the factory nav.

The Corvette OEM NAV is adequate...but only adequate. It pales in comparison to the Acura NAV system. About the only thing the two systems have in common is the the requirement to push the OK softkey to make the legalese warning go away.
IMO, the NAV integration is not only overrated, it's annoying. I can't stand the HUD showing me that I'm closing in on my freeway exit that's 2...1.9,,,1.8...1.7...etc down the road. There are simply much better systems out there in the aftermarket.
If it were me, I'd buy the Vette with the 6-disk CD player and then swap it out for an aftermarket NAV system.
Just my $0.02. YMMV. Now donning my asbestos underwear...

I have a Garmin system for my other vehicles. I actually prefer it over the Vette Nav System based on user friendliness. I like the fact my passenger can navigate the system while I drive. In the Vette, they cannot.

Ok, so what CAN you do while driving? I find that I don't use nav for giving me directions all that often. First of all, the address I need to go to is NEVER in the database. I like google maps for that sort of thing.
At any rate, I DO use the nav to look around at roads while I'm driving. I'll be on this road and I'll wonder what happens if I turn down that road, so I'll move the map around and zoom in and out and stuff. Can you do that while driving?

With a fairly simple modification, you can.
Here is the forum link to fix this aggravation:

I can't compare it to other factory navigation systems, but I like my Vette factory Nav a lot, and I definitely would order it again. My wife and I used it a bunch last year on a great 8500 mile road trip. It is very nicely integrated into the entire entertainment system and the HUD.

You should return this to have it replaced. Either the display or its video driver is starting to fail. I would expect over time this is only going to get worse. When it fails out of warranty it is going to cost on the order of $2000 to replace the unit as I don't believe that you can just get repair work done through the dealerships.

Like most any GPS navigation system, if you zoom out, many of the smaller roads will not be visible. (They reappear when you zoom in.) Since I spend considerable time on the smallest backroads, I have to stay zoomed in fairly tight in order to show the road I am currently driving.
